Justin Tuck: Burress Return Not A 'Reach'; Plaxico, Giants To Meet Friday?

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Reports ran wild on Wednesday morning about an imminent meeting between former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress and Big Blue brass, including coach Tom Coughlin.

Due to post-NFL lockout rules, the Giants weren't allowed to meet with Burress as reportedly planned yesterday. A sit-down would be able to occur on Friday at the earliest -- and that's exactly what's on tap -- a dinner date -- according to the New York Daily News.

Some fans and analysts wonder whether the free agent, outspoken about his distaste for Coughlin's coaching style, is a good fit for New York. Giants defensive leader Justin Tuck said on Wednesday that it's not really "that much of a reach."

"Being his teammate and a friend, I just honestly want what's best for him," Tuck said outside the Giants' Timex Performance Center. "I know that this team would love to have him back. We had a lot of great years together. There's a lot of chemistry there. This is my opinion, but I don't see it being any other better place than here in New York for him."

Burress called his relationship with Coughlin "ambivalent" in a television interview days after his June 6 release from prison on a gun charge. Burress later told SiriusXM's NFL Radio in July that "the head coach is going to be first and foremost" in his decision where to sign next.

"I think it's going to be give-and-take between both of them," said Tuck. "Any time you have a dispute between two people, both people need to sit down and talk it out like men. I think that's what they have on schedule, so we'll see what happens. I can't speak for Coughlin or Plax. It's well-documented that they've bumped heads in the past. Hopefully a little time apart has rekindled the love that they can share for each other."

Tuck said Burress probably sees the Giants as a real possibility, and said hopefully "it'll be another match made in heaven."

"I think so. If he didn't, why would he even look here?" said Tuck. "He realized the caliber of football team the Giants are, and we realized the caliber of football player he is."

Osi Umenyiora is another big question mark for the Giants. WFAN's Paul Dottino reported on Tuesday that the defensive end, unhappy with his contract, is likely to hold out of training camp when the team reports on Friday. Tuck touched on the Osi drama Wednesday.

"He's an invaluable member of this defense," he said. "Hopefully we can get him to kind of calm down and come be the Giant that I know he can be. But again, he's going to have to do what's best for him."
