Staten Island World War II Vet Finds American Flag Torched Outside His Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Harold Bernstein, an 85-year-old World War II veteran, returned to his home after catching a Staten Island Yankees game last week to find the American flag in front of his house burned.

Bernstein is terribly upset and says whoever the culprit is should be ashamed of themselves.

1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reports: Shocking Act Of Vandalism

“They don’t know how fortunate they are to live in a country like we live in where we got freedom of speech, freedom of everything,” Bernstein told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck.

Bernstein said he will keep the scorched flag hanging outside of his home until whoever torched it is caught. He said can’t believe his eyes when he stares at his singed stars and stripes. The former Marine and life-long patriot said he fought valiantly and heroically in Okinawa for his country and old glory, making this incomprehensible.

“I fought for the flag. That’s one of the reasons I’m so upset about it,” Bernstein told CBS 2’s Scott Rapoport.

On a tree-lined street filled with American flags he just wants to know why this happened. Other flags in the area were not damaged.

“I’m sad, what can I tell you? Words can’t explain my feelings,” Bernstein said.

Bernstein is the father of three, grandfather of 16, and the great-grandfather of 13.

Last month, just days before July 4, several residents in Roselle Park, N.J. awoke to find their American flags burned.

Bernstein’s neighbors said they are equally baffled by the vandalism.

“Harold’s a good guy. I don’t know anybody who would do it to him,” neighbor Ron Knapp said.

While many speculate this was a prank by kids, Bernstein said this is anything but child’s play.

“The one that burned my flag should burn, and I mean that with all sincerity,” he said.

If the person responsible for this is caught and convicted, what would the appropriate punishment be in this case?

    • IgnoranteElephante

Patriot, are you calling us ALL unAmerican here or are you saying that everything WE do here is unAmerican? I think you owe us a big apology!

  • Lieutenantdan

New laws need to be established. I do not think that burning the American Flag and/or a flag of another country should be considered free speech.
One can protest or express themselves in a different manner and get their point across without violating the rights of the people who respect our flag and for those who had fought bravely and for those who have lost their lives.
My Father was from the World War 2 generation, the Greatest Generation.
He survived Pearl Harbor, liberated the Philippines and was the recipient of
two Bronze Stars. He had always been disgusted by the act of flag burning.
Out of respect for our country, the people of the armed forces and oneself
let us refrain from such acts such as flag burning.
To me the people involved in this act need a shrink.
Mr. Bernstein I am saddened that after fighting in WW2 you had to be violated in this way. You fought for us in foreign lands only to have this happen to you at your home in our great country.
I hope they catch these idiots and throw their ass in Riker’s Island where they
will spend much of their time bending over!

      • Patriot

Folks, I am so sorry for my outburst. Usually I’m one of the nicest guys on the block but I ran out of my medicine and started having these bad feelings. Please excuse me. It won’t happen again, I promise!

      • fake Patriot

I like to pretend to be other folks. Because I know I’m a stupid worthless piece of filth that no one will listen to. I know, my uncles keep telling my mom that as they kick me out of the bedroom. If I use my name or a consistent sign on, people will just ignore me as I am a total d!ck that contributes nothing to the discussions.

  • DanTe

To the jerkoff that keeps saying burning flags is not illegal: burning other people’s PRIVATE PROPERTY is. I say we get to burn items outside your house while you’re in it. It’s perfectly legal according to your brainless sh/ts.

    • DanTe

I truly apologize for the outburst I’ve caused here. This is not like me at all. Please forgive me, mzielinski. It won’t happen again.

      • fake DanTe

    • emmas

this veteran, and all veterans, are to be HIGHLY respected. It disgusts me how lilttle respect veterans receive in this country. They are heroes and deserve to be treated as such..

to the lowlifes who burned the flag: when you are caught, and you will be, be afraid, be very afraid. no slap on the wrist “community service” for the likes of you, because you don’t deserve to be part of a community. may you be dropped off in the middle of basic training at parris island, navy seal training, army ranger training, and whatever the air force’s equivalent is. your “spirit” needs to be exorcised/beaten/bent. thought burning the flag was funny did ya. well, you won’t be laughing as the marines and all the other bands of good men & women introduce you to crucible/hell week and the other names basic and advanced training goes by. the colors of the flag don’t run, but your sorry butts better hope to be able to slither by the time justice is dealt to you. thank you mr bernstein for your service.

    • Tony Simulinas

I am a proud American myself, but I live in New York City and the reality of it. I have replaced 8 flags in front of my house …. most were burned, others just ripped down. I work for the NYPD and even put in a report to my precinct, the 106. The two young officers couldn’t understand why I was so very upset. They even seemed annoyed, as if they were going to report me for filing a false report ! One of them finally looked me in the face and said simply … It’s only a flag! They didn’t even want to bother with a tresspass complaint. So …. I still fly a flag …. and I buy them in boxes of three dozen on ebay …. and I keep just replacing them. New York is indeed no longer a part of the United States , especially this city. I have no one to go to for help. No one here cares…

      • USA for Forever !

Tony – that is sad to hear, flag burning does not happen in the South and the Mid West.

    • Out of Control America

So many people forget how good people who live in America have it. We can sleep at night with no fear or riots or wonder if we will be killed in a bombing as we sleep at night like other nations face.

Burning the flag is disgraceful and my message to those who think it is alright – if you don’t like it in America go live somewhere else and see what happens if you burn that other country’s flag. Bet you will never see the light of day again if you are caught!

I think whoever burned this veteran’s flag should be shipped out to one of those countries that has no tolerance for freedoms and then see how bold they are. There are too many spoiled people in this world who have NO respect for anyone or anything other than themselves.

      This story is heartbreaking.

  • Jason R

I walked through a county courthouse square, on a park bench an old man was sitting there. I said, “your old courthouse is kinda run down, ” He said, “Naw, it’ll do for our little town.”I said, “Your old flag pole has leaned a little bit, and that’s a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it.” He said, “have a seat,”and I sat down.” “Is this the first time you’ve been to our little town?” I said, “I think it is.” He said, I don’t like to brag, but were kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag. You see, we got a little hole in that flag there when Washington took it across the Delaware. And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it writing Say Can You See. And it got a bad rip in New Orleans with Packingham and Jackson tuggin’ on its seams. “And it almost fell at the Alamo beside the Texas flag, but she waved on though. She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville and she got cut again at Shiloh Hill. There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg, and the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag. On Flanders Field in World War I, she got a big hole from a bertha gun. She turned blood red in World War II. She hung limp and low by the time it was through. She was in Korea and Vietnam. She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam. ” She waved from our ships upon the briny foam, and now they’ve about quit waving her back here at home. In her own good land here she’s been abused–she’s been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused, “and the government for which she stands is scandalized throughout the land.” And she’s getting threadbare and wearing thin, but she’s in good shape for the shape she’s in. Cause she’s been through the fire before and I believe she can take a whole lot more. So we raise her up every morning, take her down every night. We don’t let her touch the ground and we fold her up right. On second thought, I do like to brag, cause im mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag.

  • IgnoranteElephante

Just a symbol, aye? No big deal, hah? Let’s change the symbol to a Star of David. Let’s just say someone burned a Star of David or graffitied a swastika over it. The whole hate crimes task force would be all over it. All symbolic expression is equal except that some symbols are more equal than others.

  • Doug Allen

The American Flag may be nothing more than a symbol to some. It is more important to others. To me it is the symbol of something I was fighting for. SOLDIERS DO THINGS THEY DON’T WISH TO DO FOR PEOPLE THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW.

I am a disabled combat veteran and find burning the flag very disrespectful. But it is veterans who are really guilty. Veterans are guilty of fighting and sacrificing so these people can have the right and opportunity to be as disrespectful as they wish to be.

  • nelson g

    deport,,,,,wake up,,,,,today a flag,tomorrow your home,,,,

    • Dakotahgeo, Pastor/Chaplain

Deported? DEPORTED??? More than likely it was an American citizen. Where the hell you gonna deport THEM?! Geeezzz Louise. Use some common sense. (Sorry, I don’t tolerate stupid people well. It’s just not one of my stronger attributes).

      • IgnoranteElephante

Then, how do you live with yourself?

      • Dakotahgeo is Stupid

But you claim to be a pastor, DOPEY. Start writing like one. All I see is a follower of Al “Lying Sack of Sh.t” Sharpton. Straighten up STUPID.

      • Dakotahgeo, Pastor/Chaplain

“But you claim to be a pastor, DOPEY. Start writing like one. All I see is a follower of Al “Lying Sack of Sh.t” Sharpton. Straighten up STUPID.”
I have never put up with caca, as a hired Pastor or in retirement and I am certainly ot about to start now, lolol. And, at the same time, I want to thank you for your sterling witness as an example to live by and go by. (Oh myyy, how DO I keep putting up with theseignorant clods, lolol. Thank you, Lord!)
Dakotahgeo, M.Div. Pastor/Chaplain (Retired, except when these commenters make me answer their silly diatribes, lolol).

  • robert chatillion

The person who did this should be deported.

    • flea

NO…The person who did this should be hung by his b#lls.

  • Matthew Kutun

I live in SI. This is disgusting.

    • Manhattan Queen

      No…Staten Island is disgusting.

  • richard wad

get over it. probably just some punk kid having his jollies. no relevance to his armed service other than it makes for a headline for comment trolls

    • irene sikula

apparently you are not from the usa

    • Madelyn

This is the kind of mentality that allows this kind of behavior to go on and on…
oh they’re just kids….like that ‘s supposed to excuse it.

This is complete hatred of our country and this is where it starts.

I suppose with your way of thinking, we should be happy they didn’t sey the house on fire with Mr.Bernstein in it, right?

Thank you Mr. Bernstein for your brave service and sacrifice..and I salute you.

      • Ignorante Elephante

Is this Madelyn? THE Madelyn??? I thought you and your son were expired, Ms. O’Hara. My apologies… my fault!

      • IgnoranteElephante

I think you mean O’hare not O’hara. The legendary atheist. Most historians now acknowledge atheism to be a Zionist movement, formulated to dilute and eradicate all religions but that of the chosen.

The real IgnoranteElephante never uses a space between “Ignorante” and “Elephante.” A pox on you!

    • Dakotahgeo, Pastor/Chaplain

Thank you richard. Some people live very boring lives. “Things” like this story “excite” them! Heh heh heh. Good on ya!

    • DTT

Perfect last name. You’re a WAD of stupidity.

      • Lungs_of_Steel

        Mr. Wad is entirely correct.

The issue is not about the victim. It’s about the crime, which is defacing property. All these demands for deportation, etc. are just plum silly and rely on emotion without any logical objectivity. And then the media gets you all worked up in a tizzy to lambaste imaginary people on the Internet.

        It’s laughable!

      • DTT

I am thoroughly ashamed of my post to you, Mr. Wad. After a good night’s rest and sobering up, I can’t believe I would post such trash. Apologies are in order. Please forgive me.

  • IgnoranteElephante

Unfortunately, lofty maggots like Dakotahgeo are not oddities, but are becoming more and more tolerated in New York. They complain and complain, recite information regurgitated from Wikipedia without ever comprehending the substance of the information and scream annoying sound bites at whomever will listen. They look down upon what was once the norm like driving and eating meat and try to cram their fringe agenda down our throats in the name of unity. They purport to be about tolerance but only tolerate what is agreeable to them. Anything else is unacceptable. They denounce materialism and wealth by using their wealthy parents money to purchase pompous clothes and apologize the minute daddy’s wealth becomes known.

The real oddity is that these people are moving from the shadows into the mainstream where foolish politicians buy into their agenda. Take a stand and stop this nonsense before it stops you in your tracks. Take a stand for American values and give this “utopian idealism” the boot.

    • Dakotahgeo

Sorry, Mr. Increidble aka Ignorante lephante, you are all wrong. I don’t complain about arrogant people, I just correct them when they are wrong. The world is changing and i realize it’s hard to accept that change. You cannot, and will not stop it, of course. That’s what’s so frustrating for you and your kind. We’ll continue to pray for you and pity you. Good Day? !

      • StanM

Dakotahgeo, the number and character of the comments you have made here make you look more than a little suspicious as the perpetrator of this cowardly deed. Otherwise, what is your motivation for the amount of time and “thought” you have devoted to this?

      • IgnoranteElephante

That’s what you think, Mr. Illiterate. Your trust funds are not absolute, and eventually the life of a freelancer or professional student will run dry, and you will be forced into the real world where drinking micro brewed and vintage beer all day will prove fruitless. You will never survive. This combined with AIDS, other STDs, Scurvy, Rickets, and other diseases from your veganism and your plagued lifestyle will kill you all off. You have turned on your own with the use of the term “pray.” Let’s hope that they forgive you.

The current events of the nation should foretell that your pretentious “holier than thou” lifestyle days are numbered. Eventually, your fix geared antique bicycles will go the way of the bullpen car, your dirty clothes and retro dresses will be devoured by bedbugs, and one by one, you will lose your roommates and be unable to survive in this fair city. You will be forced back to Ohio, Michigan, or Indiana, where you came, and be ridiculed like the under achieving, anti social, self righteous, can’t-fit-in-with anyone, misfit that you are, where you will be bullied by the real Americans. Does this touch a nerve or bring back repressed memories from a not-too-distant childhood, Opie?

    • Dakotahgeo, Pastor/Chaplain

It boggles the mind how far off you are in your diatribes regarding me, but it is fun reading. You have and always will fail. My sincere prayers for you. (I’ll still be around… watching you!) ;-)

      • IgnoranteElephante

Until you’re ravaged by Legionnaire’s Disease or some other pox. What’s the matter, Dakota, do my “diatribes” bring back memories of you getting your @$$ kicked in some Youngstown schoolyard? You are and will always be a loser! Never forget that, you outlandish freak!

  • Mike the Bike

Cut his balls off. He is showing himself not to be in need of them anyway.

    • Dakotahgeo

Ahhhhh!!! So you’re in need of a twin, are you? LOLOL.

  • Jason

    Deport the flag burners.Very simple.

  • Nick

The arsonist obviously hate this country. So why not just revoke its citizenship in this “lousy” country depart the stupid F?

    • Lungs_of_Steel

How can you be so sure the perpetrator hates America?

And since when has it been illegal to burn a flag or hate America?

Obviously you’re not a deep thinker – no offense.

      • Nick

Oh that’s right. They just want to burn down people’s homes, right? And that’s soooo much better. Either case: deport them.

And it’s not about being illegal. Deportation is not incarceration. They don’t want their citizenship, they can have it removed. After all, it is what these bums want.

    • Nick

“The arsonist obviously hates this country. So why not just revoke (their) citizenship in this “lousy” country (and) “deport” the stupid F*?”

      There… now I feel better!

      • @fake Nick

So you know your opinion is totally discarded by people because it’s usually just plain stupid. That’s why you keep faking other people’s names?

  • steffi

My father fought in WW2. He fought for freedom. This is not freedom of speech. Its nazism. This is how it starts. Remember what the Germans did to the Jews and their business. i hope when they get caught, they the S–T kicked out of them. The courts say yelling FIRE in a crowded theater is not freedom of speech, neither is burning the flag. I guess they didn’t learn anything in history class.

    • Dakotahgeo

Sorry, that does not come under history; it is taught in government and psychology. My uncle died in WW II… your point is??? Millions have died in wars. No dead soldier is any more important to their families than any other soldier.
The past wars might give us a chnace yet to build on peace for all. By the way, burning the flag IS protected speech. The US Supreme Court has already ruled on that. That doesn’t mean it is right, however.

      • madelyn

What is your problem, Dakotahgeo? DOn’t like it here- go back to your native land.
This act is not only one of direct hatred to America, it is the act of a coward.

Your self righeous rantings make me sick.

        Steffi, I am with you.

      • Dakotahgeo

        My native land is Uranus.

    • Nora

that seems about right cause you’re a A$$ hole

      • Dakotahgeo, Pastor/Chaplain

Nora, I’m not sure you realize this but anyone can hijack your name under their own e-mail address and it will make it look as if you sent it. I will prove it to you after I send this… promise you won’t be offended, okay? LOLOL.

To all you other commenters here who are cranky and haven’t had their morning bottle yet, I thank you for your hours of comedic relief (I really do!), and I want you to know that you’re all on Candid Camera, making countless millions laugh with joyful mirth.
I must sign off for now but you’ll receive a short ‘message’ from Nora in just a few seconds that should show you how wacky I could REALLY get if I wanted to. Ignornate Elephante has already done so a couple of times so he understands what is going on, lolol.
Keith, I’m sorry to inform you that I didn’t burn ‘ol veteran fartblossom’s flag. I am retired to South America and teaching English on a green card and granted dual citizenship and can watch you local yokels from a good distance. South Americans think you people are a hoot! Especially watching the debt celing three ring circus! Okay… okay… enough!!!

      • Nora and Iggy

This is “Nora” speaking and I’d like to invite y’all to my wedding tomorrow to Mr. Ignorante Elephante. We have both brushed our tooths so we are ready for anything and everything.
Be sure and arrive early. The wedding will be held at the third still past Sleepy Hollow… BYOB!!!
        Cheers and Tra-la-la!!!
Nora, Ignorante Elephante and the brood!

  • brooklyn4ever

Yesterday I participated in a motorcycle ride that had a good 500 bikes in attendance sponsored by NY Rolling Thunder, Chapter 2 Staten Island to benefit our Disabled American Vet’s. When the idiot is found who is burning our flag, please turn him over to the 500 patriotic bikers from yesterday. We’ll know what to do with him.

    • Dakotahgeo

Just don’t leave any evidence on a miscreant camera anywhere. They now number in the hundreds of thousands in the oddest of locations and have been used in criminal cases to indict, prosecute, and find criminals/murderers guilty. Our law enforcement systems have you all covered.

      • carter

        you are an imbecile

  • jlb

Is the photo actually the flag that was damaged? If his was the only one damaged, and that’s the extent of the damage, could it be that someone smoking outside of his house flicked a match or a butt and it accidentally hit the flag, lighting it up slightly? If someone is going to vandalize flags with the intention of sending a message, don’t you think they would burn as many as possible in the neighborhood, and attempt to do more than just burn the edges? I think he should have first asked any teenagers or clumsy folks who might have been hanging around his place, instead of freaking out all conspiracy-theory like and making something like this an overblown news story.

    • PoliticallyAccurate

Ummm, there HAS been several burnings of residential flags on Staten Island. ;-)

      • Jack Meoffe

Ummm, that would be there *HAVE* been several burnings of residential flags on Staten Island. :P

      • Dakotahgeo

Thank you, Jack. The Grammar Police are proud of you. Some commenters on these blogs are not the brightest lightbubls in the chandelier!

      • PoliticallyAccurate

Unfortunately, there’s no way to edit. I am glad a written error is the only bunch in your panties. How brilliant to make that your only contribution. As for you, dakota, you’ve brayed about your education and can’t spell lightbulb? Glad to revisit this thread and see your elitist b.s. isn’t being had.

    • Dakotahgeo

Ohhh, that’s too easy, jlb. These dyed-in-the-wool ‘patriots’ need a GOOD story to chew on. None of this accidental stuff. Just putting the small fire out would have been no fun. (just kidding, of course, but you do have a good point. Maybe the newspaper boy did it.)

    • Dakotahgeo, Pastor/Chaplain

“As for you, dakota, you’ve brayed about your education and can’t spell lightbulb? Glad to revisit this thread and see your elitist b.s. isn’t being had.”
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa, lolol. Simply a typo. lightbulb, lightbulb, lightbulb (97 more times to write it…LOLOL).
For the rest of you cranky pablum sippers on here, you sure are a grumpy lot. Don’t stop taking your tranqillizers… it’s dangerous!

  • Scott

Burning the flag is not illegal. It is a protected as form of political expression under the 1st amendment. Should it be illegal ? Definitely. So I don’t think anyone is going to waste time looking for a flag burner. But perhaps you could get them for trespassing or some other crime. Just put a new flag where you had the old one and wait up for them to come by again. Because they will. Then you can do what you see fit, under the law of course.

    • IgnoranteElephante

Burning your flag is legal, Burning another’s flag is arson, criminal mischief, and possibly burglary depending on where the flag was located.

    • Bill

@Scott nobody questioning the legality of flag burning but they burned the mans flag which was hanging at his house on his property. That is not legal. Just like somebody can’t burn your mailbox because they feel like it.

      • Dakotahgeo

Agreed. But it does happen, especially in rural areas.

  • PoliticallyAccurate

The fact that this sneaky liberal burned someone else’s personal property under the cover of cowardice shows THEIR flag: All white. There is no doubt they would whine like a newborn goat if put in the presence of real men. As for “dakota”, well…. that’s the voice of uneducated ingrates raised in the “celebratory” culture of today. Attitude would probably be more “huffy” if that flag had, say, the colors of the rainbow on it. Wanna bet???

    • Dakotahgeo

Ohhhhh, not so, ol’moosebreath, lolol. Very much educated beyond Masters level, thank you, and thanks to everyone’s taxes and my hard work. All flags are symbolic of somethin, good or bad. If my American flag got burned, I’d replace it, no problem! (So now you’re over here, Mr. Incredible, et al. Be nice and patriotic but don’t be an ugly American christian, okay?) Good Day and cheers!

      • PoliticallyAccurate

I can assure you I am not “over here” from some other place where you claim me as Mr Incredible. I don’t camp out on sites bloviating about my degrees and calling others “third graders.” Consider, instead, that perhaps more than one person finds you to be annoying with your utopian naivety, which you have adequately proven. You are too lofty and in awe of yourself for discourse, so I will leave you to play with yourself. I am a vet, and current firefighter….. you do not know me. But I recognize a pompous blowhard when I see one. Blather on about your laureates. I think most people here find you to be the oddity with your apparent ignorance as to the issue, despite your self-proclaimed wall of sheepskin. You can’t play ball on my court, son, so just excuse yourself and scoot along.

      • KEITH

keep bragging about your accomplishmnets…it makes you seem desperate for approvaland recognition.

Seriously, did you burn his flag???.

    • nonsectarian

LIBERAL? Not likely moron. And your moniker is wrong: more like politically INaccurate!

      • Dakotahgeo, Pastor/Chaplain

Thank you, nonsectarian. I am wondering just what, besides being a Vet and a firefighte,r has to do with anything? You’re a ‘live vet.” You’re worth nothing to this country or these blogs when you put down people that are correct. You are able to work for a living. What can the deceased soldier do? You got nothing to brag about. And I shall be here for quite a while, keeping an ‘eye’ on your movements, comments, and your vindictive outpourings. Do have a nice Sunday!

      • PoliticallyAccurate

Nonsensectrarian, I GUARANTEE he’s a liberal. You can buy a different flavor of foolaid… I don’t care. And I listed what I do because dakota had me confused with someone else. He had since cleared that up. You are a fool for making any assumptions about my ability, or disability. But you are worthy of no definition.

  • David M

If this person does not respect the deeds and ideals behind the flag, just pull his or her citizenship and send them to north korea or iran and let them burn that flag.

    • Dakotahgeo

seriously, you sound like a soft tea-publican, David. The USA will go on, with or without the flag. Just make sure you LIVE UP to its ideals and deeds. That’s more valuable than the flag any day. Move to “north korea or iran”?… be serious! Methinks you protest too much and too loudly. Cheers! and smile once in awhile.

  • christine

what the hell is wrong with you guys. that “cloth” represents our country. if you dont respect it, get the hell out!!!!! most of us dont want you here anyway

    • Dakotahgeo

christine… I’ve had the flag hanging outside my home for the last 10+ years, not because I have to but because I want to. If someone burns my flag (Lord, I need to look into buying a flagpole!!!), I grumble, and go out and buy another one. Not because the country will fall apart if I don’t, but because I like it. Will I love my country less because I don’t have a flag? Of course not. I feellike I’m explaining this to third graders sometimes. Educate yourselves, please! Your ovverpatriotism sounds strange.

KAt what point do you do more than “grumble” about vandalism? Must be nice to have money to throw at replacing problems, rather than solving them. Same hold true for your car? If it was torched, you’d just “replace” it after your “grumbling”? Oh, wise one, preach to us your wisdom of insurance….. they’d drop you quick, despite your “grumbling.” Maybe at some point in your “life” you will have something worth fighting for. But it’s hard to explain to a jackinapes with such a lofty attitude. You clearly have never seen a battlefield. So naive and idealistic. Enjoy your blanket of freedom, “grumbler.”

Where can I meet you Dakotahgeo? I would very much like to give you a few tips, & pointers on the ….finer points of being an American. And I think you not only owe every veteran in this great country of ours a straight up apology, but need to do some studious learning of “in the ranks”, yourself for approximately 3 to 6 years.
Then, perhaps only then, ….you would show a little more respect of what others have given, ….. their lives to defend the rights & freedoms for a punk like you stating such ignoble comments.
You can find me on FaceBook under the group called F Co. 40th Armor “Patton”, Berlin Brigade. My name is John E. Osman III & I am also a life member, past Post Chaplain, & past Post Commander of Dyer Memorial Post 6448 of the VFW. I will try to contact this veteran with the scorched flag, & offer to send him my brandnew one that I was preparing for my home. He could place it right next to his scorched one, & if need be, I’ll figure out how to go there, (@ my expense), & put it up myself.

      kudos to u christine….

How about visiting every veteran living on Staten Island AND sending each of them a personal, handwritten , ORIGINAL letter of apology for their behaviour?
Better still weekly visits for a year to the local VA hospital where they can personally apologize to the veterans who have given so much for the symbol they (the flag burners) treated with no respect.
We give very little in the way of atonement to actions such as these. It’s about time clever sentences were handed out that fit the “crime”.

I think that the most clever of sentences would be to cut their hands off this way they never get the opportunity to disgrace Old Glory again. That sounds fair to me. It will give them something to think about.

This, evidently, is what happens when one worships a piece of cloth. 1945? Time to move along… we have numerous problems facing us today… time to put the past… in the past. Flag-burning is the very least of our problems.

    • Micha

I agree that in the grand scheme of things, a burnt flag isn’t the end all, be all. HOWEVER, this veteran, and all veterans, are to be HIGHLY respected. It disgusts me how lilttle respect veterans receive in this country. They are heroes and deserve to be treated as such..

    • Dave J

Not sure the cloth is being worshiped here…I think it is the ideals that it represents. I believe the attitude that it is nothing more than cloth is a real problem in our society, nothing holds meaning anymore…nothing is respected. 1945 was lot that long ago in the great scheme of time…how quickly people forget the past and the lessons it teaches us. Guess we should just ignore this behaviour then.

I can only hope they catch the culprit(s) who did this but the presence of the flag means more to
than the ideals and deeds which they represent. The WW II was the last great military accomplishment for the USA and the last 10 years have not been a positive sign for our military. This has had a lot to do with the lower morale of this country towards the military, wars, Commanders, etc. We’ve simply gotten ourselves in so deep, we’ve lost the edge we once had to win and help others. That’s what WW II was all about… beat the enemy and return the beaten countries totheir former good societies.
The flag didn’t win the war. The soldiers did. Another problem is that, as the years go by, more and more veterans are dying, thus we don’t see the former heros in plain sight anymore.
