Jose Reyes Lands On The DL, Tejada And Baxter Recalled

NEW YORK (WFAN) – The New York Mets have released a statement confirming the move of Jose Reyes to the disabled list.  Ruben Tejada and Mike Baxter have been called up from Triple-A Buffalo.

The Mets' official press release is as follows:

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 8, 2011 – The New York Mets announced today that the club has placed infielders Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy on the Disabled List and recalled outfielder Mike Baxter and infielder Ruben Tejada from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. Baxter will wear #23 and Tejada will wear #11 and both will be available for tonight's game.

Reyes left yesterday's game in the second inning after experiencing stiffness in his left hamstring.  Reyes received an MRI and was examined yesterday at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He has a strain of his left hamstring.

Murphy was removed from the game in the seventh inning after sustaining an injury to his left knee. Murphy also received an MRI and was examined at HSS yesterday.  He has a sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the left knee.

The Mets claimed Baxter off waivers from the San Diego Padres on July 22 earlier this year. He was batting .256 (10-39) with four runs scored, two triples, one home run and five RBI in 11 games for the Bisons after batting .438 (7-16) with four RBI in four games for St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League.

Baxter, a Whitestone, Queens native, had surgery earlier this year to repair ligaments in his left thumb injured during Spring Training. Before being claimed by the Mets, Baxter had appeared in 11 major league rehabilitation games with Lake Elsinore (A) of the California League. Baxter began his rehabilitation on June 8, batting .278 (10-36) with one double and two RBI.

The 26-year-old appeared in nine games with the Padres last year, collecting one hit and one RBI in eight at-bats.

Baxter starred at Archbishop Molloy in Queens before teaming up with Tampa Bay Rays lefthanded pitcher David Price at Vanderbilt University.

Tejada, 21, was with the Mets earlier this year from May 17-July 20, hitting .250 (42-168) with 13 runs scored, four doubles and 19 RBI in 52 games. He hit .193 (11-57) in 15 games with the Bisons from July 21-August 6. Overall, the infielder was batting .246 (51-207) with seven doubles, three triples, three home runs and 21 RBI in 54 games with the Bisons this season.
