Cuomo Creates Search Panel To Pick Next MTA Chairman

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYorkAP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has taken an unusual step of creating a search panel to help choose the next chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

He says the next MTA chairman has to be responsible to the straphangers and other New Yorkers using the system.

Governors usually consider such high-profile appointments privately and then simply announce their choice.

Cuomo says he wants an international search to find the next head of the mass transit authority that runs the trains, tunnels and bridges in and around New York City.

Cuomo said the state has also contracted with an executive recruitment firm.

The Democrat’s choice must be confirmed by the Republican-led Senate.

Jay Walder resigned from the $350,000-a-year job last month to become CEO of the MTR Corporation in Hong Kong. It operates rail services in Asia and Europe.

Walder joined the MTA in October 2009 after working on London’s mass transit system.

Do you think holding a search is the best way to pick the next MTA head? Let us know below…

For a good example of how to do things, maybe the NY State legislature should look at New Jersey, where the state Commissioner of Transportation doubles as the Board Chairman for NJ Transit. One guy wears two hats for one not-too-excessive salary. Anybody want to rewrite New York’s Public Authorities Law to allow for such a thing?

Kudos to Mr. Cuomo for demonstrating yet again what a masterful politician he is by showing the people he intends to make choices that are in the best interests of New York, not of himself or his office. This approach ensures that the best and most qualified individual will be put in place to oversee an organization that affects the lives of millions. Michael Bloomberg – take note (can you say…Cathie Black?).

I HOPE HE MAKES A VERY GOOD CHOICE. MASS TRANSIT HAS HAD SOME MOJOR IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PAST BUT STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO, THIS APPLIES TO EVERYTHING BUSES, TRAINS, TUNNELS ETC. RIGHT NOW, THERE SEEMS TO BE MAJOR SCHEDULING PROBLEMS (W/BUSES). I WANT THE BEST PERSON QUALIFIED TO GET THE JOB & BE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE GOV. & THE PUBLIC ! !
