NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) – Jets center Nick Mangold gave the Jets a scare on Thursday.

He was down on both hands and knees for several minutes following a goal-line drill, and had to be examined by the Jets’ medical staff.

It turns out Mangold suffered a stinger, and was later listed as day to day after leaving practice early.

The neurological injury, common in football and other high-contact sports, also is called a “burner,” which often involves the pinching of nerves in the neck and/or arm.

Shonn Greene took a handoff and went over the pile, when Mangold went down with several other linemen blocking. As the players got up from the pile, Mangold remained down as trainers rushed over to him, along with coach Rex Ryan. Several concerned teammates, uncertain about what happened, came over while Mangold was being looked at.

After about 4 minutes, Mangold got up slowly and walked gingerly to the locker room under his own power as fans cheered. He did not return to practice, and Rob Turner took over at center with the first-team offense.
