Neighborhood On Edge After Alleged Rape On Upper East Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A 27-year-old woman is hospitalized after an alleged rape by a man entering her apartment through the  window.

Screaming from the woman’s ground floor apartment on East 90th Street at at 5:15 a.m. left residents terrified.

“I’m just petrified. I’m scared for my life,” neighbor Stephanie told CBS 2’s Dave Carlin.

Stephanie said the commotion was in the unit right next door, on the other side her bedroom wall.

“It was loud. I heard it two times and I woke up cause I’m a light sleeper and I heard it two times,” she said. “Yes, two screams.”

Building Superintendent Ben Midulla said the victim lives alone and is from Texas.

“She’s a very nice girl. I mean she just moved in and she’s a sweetheart. I hope everything’s fine with her, you know? When did she move in? Maybe a month ago not even,” he said.

“He must have pulled the ladder down he must have had something that helped him go in there,” Stephanie said.

Police checked the fire escape and ladder, and looked at surveillance video in buildings on the block and businesses at the Second Avenue intersection.

“It’s a really, really friendly neighborhood. It’s a bad thing that should happen to anyone,” said Oliver Gomez, a doorman for a nearby building.

News of the alleged rape has neighbors thinking about security.

“You just have to be aware and just lock your windows,” said resident Karlene Dormer.

“I’m probably gonna have my brother or boyfriend be with me at all times,” Stephanie said.

Police said the suspect is 20 to 25-years-old, about 5’7″ with medium complexion, dark hair, and wearing a white shirt and black pants.

Why all the racist comments? The neighborhood was plastered with flyers looking for a hispanic male when that elderly lady was attacked here on East 83rd, only to find out that the crime was commited by a white ex-con. Let’s direct our rage at degenerate indivuduals, not groups.

About 2 weeks ago, I believe someone came up my fire-escape and through my 5th flr bedroom window; also around 5am as well. I have a little dog and I had a friend asleep on my couch. Thank God.
I couldn’t explain why the furniture had been moved away from my window (where the fire-escape is) when I woke. A clearing had been made at the foot of my bed. My window unlocked. I was terrified but didn’t report it as nothing had been stolen nor was I harmed. I live in UES. 81st … Ladies take as many precautions as possible, never take your security for granted. I recommend baby powder for your windowpane (better for finger prints) and maybe bells sewn on your curtains? ..Something to make noise.

To the Rapist: You are now a FUGITIVE. You had better climb on a Spacecraft and head for the MOON. If you stay on Earth they’re going to hunt you down and take you down just like the animal that you are. SpaceX gonna give it to ya.

It’s so sad that these people keep coming here to NYC and think they are living back at home. Why was her security gate not closed? They seem to not realize just where it is they have moved to. Sex and the City is not real.

Where have we gone wrong??! With FREE education, FREE breakfast, FREE lunch, FREE transportation, FREE books, FREE medical, FREE/subsidized housing, FREE LIBRARIES–how is it that there are so many pedophiles, child molesters, rapists, murderers, and sex offenders? Perhaps porn magazines have to be available by subscription ONLY, and NOT on display at newsstands.

  9. Wheatland Girl says:

Why didn’t Stephanie, the neighbor, call the police when the girl screamed??? A similar incident happened to me when I was young and no one came to my aid either, despite my loud screams that I knew others could hear. Wake up people, you may save someone’s life!

    1. blah says:

cuz that neighbor is stupid! she’s either a liar or she knew what was happening.

  10. nypj says:

    what exactly is “medium complexion”?
being overly politically correct does nothing to help describe a criminal suspect.

    1. blah says:

we live in an age where people cry murder when you use the “race” words. it is just plain stupid and immature. very immature. every little thing offends them. every little thing makes them the victim. well, they need to grow up and learn to diversify. lastly, nypd needs to quickly release the sketch of that loser rapist.

  12. Barry Levine says:

Anyone creeping into someones apartment through a window to commit any kind of crime should be given a hundred lashes…….ten every week for ten weeks…..and then sent to a penal colony, not a prison, for twenty years. There are plenty islands in the East river that could serve as penal colonies where brutal treatment will be administered. I am sure the message would get through to anyone thinking that they would commit a crime and then be sent to a government sponsored country club like some of the minimum security Federal prisons are.

    1. Jessica says:

I really really like that idea!!!
I have always thought the criminal justice system in Starship Troopers (the book) should be brought to life in the real world.
I would also say though for certain crimes a punishment followed by actual training for some form of work would be a much better way to lower the recidivism rate, then simple prison sentances where most inmates are only educated in more violent forms of crime, or have to join gangs to survive and then stay in them even on the outside.
Whether our prisons are coutryclubs or criminal cess pools they are not helping to re-educate or intimedate our criminals into better behavior.
