Man Accused Of Fatally Stabbing Mother, Father And 3-Year-Old Niece In Harrison, N.J.

HARRISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- It was a haunting scene in one neighborhood Tuesday afternoon as the bodies of a 3-year-old girl and her grandparents were carried out of a home on Hamilton Street.

Authorities said a man fatally stabbed his mother, father and his niece before walking into the Harrison Police station, where he was arrested.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said the victims' and suspect's names weren't being released pending notification of family.

"It's very sad. Very sad." one woman told CBS 2's Christine Sloan.

The little girl's mother is currently in Haiti and that is why authorities said the names aren't being released. As the suspect sits in jail, investigators are reaching out to his sister to tell her what happened to her parents and her little girl.

Neighborhood residents said they were shocked to hear the news, including some who have seen the suspect.

"He never looked odd or anything like that, he's actually a fairly nice guy. You know, today, you don't know.  People snap," Jim Bredamus told 1010 WINS.

Some in the neighborhood told CBS 2's Sean Hennessey that the suspect was being treated for depression.

"It's really shocking. I don't know how that could be done," neighbor Alvaro Hernandez said.

Doris Cortez is one of the many people saddened and sickened by Tuesday's events.

"It's really sad to me -- especially a little girl. What did it cross to his mind to do that?" she asked.

Another neighbor said that he relocated from Newark in hopes of living in a safer neighborhood.

"I moved to this area thinking, you know, getting away from Newark. When you see these things happen, it makes you think, it can happen anywhere," he said.
