But police commissioner Richard Dormer denies there is an epidemic.

"The numbers are very low. You know, they're a lot lower than the bank robberies that we're handling right now," he says.

Dormer says his department is working with the pharmacies in both Suffolk and Nassau.

"[We] give them some points on how to keep their business safe," he says.

He says all pharmacies should make sure they have video surveillance.

"That's part of our training with the pharmacies. They're very valuable tools when we investigate these kinds of incidents," he says.

The latest robbery happened Monday in Sayville. Police said the thief used an air gun and stole Oxycodone pills.
