Bronx Livery Cab Driver Julio Lora Dies From Injuries Sustained In March Shooting

NEW YORK (AP/WCBS 880) - A livery cab driver who was shot by a passenger during a Bronx robbery attempt has succumbed to his injuries.

The death of Julio Lora was announced Wednesday by the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers. He was wounded on March 31.

"He was able to speak for a very short period and he seemed to accept what had happened to him, but nevertheless, very painful," said spokesman Fernando Mateo.

Mateo says the 64-year-old father of six worked seven days a week and 12 hours a day to support his family.

Mateo told WCBS 880 that he leaves "a whole generation behind."

His wake will be held Saturday at the Ortiz Funeral Home in the Bronx.

Donations are being sought to help the Lora family return his body to the Dominican Republic.
