"Everything from composition books to rulers, dictionaries to pens, protractors, colored pencils," said Lisa Jameson, director of the Huntington organization.

Each child is getting a colorful backpack, filled with all the classroom materials needed to help them compete.

"We really want them to be successful and we think that this simple task of giving them these items really can start them off on a good foot," she told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.

Jameson pointed out that due to the difficult economy, the need for assistance has never been greater.

"Parents are struggling to provide their kids with what they need. We are definitely seeing an increase in the number of families who have come through our doors," she said. "We're hoping that this will put smiles on kids' faces. We hope that it helps the burden of parents and we know it does."

Jameseon says it's a great feeling to send a needy child off to school, ready to compete.
