Ban On Headscarves Leads To Scuffle, Arrests At Rye Playland Amusement Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – What started out as a day of fun in the sun turned into a scuffle and numerous arrests at Rye Playland.

Some 3,000 people were part of a Muslim tour group who went to the park Tuesday to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan.

Things started to go south, however, when women wearing headscarves wanted to get on some of the rides. Any sort of head covering is banned on the rides for safety reasons.

The women were offered refunds.

According to Westchester County officials, some members of the tour started to argue among themselves, and when park rangers attempted to intervene, they wound up injured and hospitalized.

Parks Deputy Commissioner Peter Tartaglia told the Associated Press the tour operator had been told about the ban repeatedly before the event.

Tartaglia explained the reason for the ban, saying scarves can get caught in mechanical equipment, fly off, land on tracks, choke riders and more.

“We respect the religious purpose of wearing it, but we have several rides that cannot go on with any sort of headgear,” said Tartaglia.

Police responded to the scene and the park was shut down for two hours. 15 people were arrested and later released.

Is the ban on headscarves at the park appropriate? Should there be a broader ban on headscarves?

The bottom line here is that Ryeland is a privately owned amusement park with rules and regulations for ALL people regardless of race, gender, or religion. If you do not want to or can’t follow the rules (particularly safety rules) then you either don’t go on that ride or leave the park all together – period.

    Great story thanks for sharing

This was organized for the purpose of causing conflict and challenging the rules. The muslims DO NOT want to comply or assimilate in any way, they put on these “shows” in order to gain sympathy from Americans who will join their cause.

  • daffy

Let em choke on their scarfs?? It’s their constitutional right. All this micromanaging? Like the government really cares about the people? What happened to the constitution? Stop the control, if someone want to get their scarf caught let them, stop controlling everyone!!!!!!

    • KPMc

What if someone’s scarf gets caught but it entangles an innocent bystander… your child maybe. Is it ok then or are you just too short-sighted and stupid to realize someone ELSE might be in danger.

  • Darth Vader vs. Burqas

Darth Vader outfits look eerily similar to burqas, don’t they?

“Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is a Muslim, and as his time in space coincided with the last part of Ramadan, the Islamic National Fatwa Council drew up the first comprehensive guidebook for Muslims in space.[1][3] The 18-page guidebook is titled “Guidelines for Performing Islamic Rites (Ibadah) at the International Space Station”, and details issues such as how to pray in a low-gravity environment, how to locate Mecca from the ISS, how to determine prayer times, and issues surrounding fasting. The orbit of the ISS results in one day/night cycle every 90 minutes,[1][28] so the issues of fasting during Ramadan are also addressed. “

Just a couple of months ago I was trying to post my anti gay marriage opinion on this site, which were niether hateful or distructive. I now read a multitude of of over the top clearly racsist, bigoted commments that the censor allows now. Just proves WHO is ” RINGING ” things. These women have a consitutional right to express there religious freedom. End of story.

No one is telling them they can’t wear scarves……..just not on rides. End of story

Where ever Muslims congregate, strife inevitably arises. That is a fact. If you doubt, research for yourself. This religion is bane on the civilized world. I fear it will lead humanity to extinction by the actions of zealous wingnuts.

They should be allowed as long as the headscarves have a chin strap.

Did your mother drop you on your head as a child?

  • MarleneTom Three nuggets of wisdom from dclucky’s blog:
    1. “Let me ask it this way – if this had happened in your native country and you tried to “help” while they were being arrested, do you think it would have stopped with another arrest…or a bullet?”
    2. “Along those same lines, what if an American woman went to and Islamic country and tried to get away with NOT wearing a hajib? Do you think your countrymen would be so understanding? We all know the answer.”
    3. “Why, if it is so hard to live here, did you move to America? If our rules are so incredibly hard to follow, why not move home? What brought you to this country? Was it, per chance, that there is freedom here? Was it because, no matter what you do, you are not locked up or persecuted? My guess would be a resounding, “YES!!!”

  • angry NYer

they should have just let them ride with their scarves on regardless of the hazards.. besides, they are forewarned.. let the scarves get caught on the machine and make them choke and die… then we’ll just laugh our ass out if that happens..

    • think of other people lady

yes but other innocent people could get hurt and that is what the park was worried about

      • angry NYer

yeah i know but im just referring to those arrogant scarf-wearing bigots to let them ride anyway.. then lets just see what happens next if they get an accident for being arrogant…

I agree with the park rules is for the safety of all there. The Muslims ladies should have just accepted their full refund which by the way the park was under NO legal law to have to refund them any monies. But they refused and forced their ways. Not good at all. Glad the police were called and those misbehaving were arrested.

  • espana77

I think it was not a smart move on the part of the Muslim American Society of New York to pick a place to go to for Eid al-Fitr that they KNEW had a ban on head gear. From the article, it sounds to me like the police WERE using excessive force (which is unfortunately nothing new in America)….you don’t push a woman down to the ground even if she is yelling. I can totally understand if the woman was putting her hands on the cop but that was NOT the case here. I think the male relatives were totally within their right to come to her defense. The cops didn’t have the right to touch her.
For many women, the headscarf is a huge part of their identity. People need to understand that it’s all about modesty…covering up ones outward beauty because that is seen as something only for one’s husband…also it might help prevent men, who are so visually stimulated, from lusting after a woman if she’s covering up. Educate yourselves people b4 spewing untruths.

    • Dr Dan

“Modest” women wouldn’t be yelling at anyone and disobeying park rules. Acting like uneducated classless people is certainly NOT modest.

  • Elizabeth

I wonder….would there be so much negative uproar about this article if hypothetically speaking the people in question were Amish? For all practical purposes, Amish people are dressing in an Islamic manner. The women wear bonnets & the men wear black hats. The women wear long dresses with long sleeves & dark socks….covering up everything but their face & hands. The men wear long sleeves, long pants, dark socks & often wear full beards….like many Muslim men. For them, it’s also all about modesty. People may not understand or agree with their lifestyle but it seems that Americans have much more respect for them. No one’s telling them to go back to their homeland ie. Germany, Switzerland & France. Now, of course, Amish people probably would not be at an amusement park….idk, I could be wrong. Also, for those Muslims involved….c’mon now….from one Muslim to another…we just got done having the most religious month of the year by not eating or drinking from sun up to sun down & going to the mosque every day for special prayers….is this the way to end Ramadan by causing a riot? I think not. We have to exemplify better behavior than those around us & not give non-muslims an excuse to attack us. If they wouldn’t let you on the rides, I think the entire group of 3000+ muslims should have walked out, declared a boycott, demanded their money back…hit the amusement park where it really hurts…their pocketbooks & called on all other Muslims to never go there. There ARE amusement parks that DO allow headscarfs. Safety can be a huge issue too. Check this story out:

    • kent

They were offered refunds, even though their leader was informed of the policy (which has been in effect for more than 3 years) and did he tell everyone?…Or did they think they would get special treatment?…….These rules apply to EVERYONE!!!….Wow, what a shame it would be if they never came back.

    • Amber

Correction: Amish women may wear sheer stockings, they may take off their bonnets in public leaving only a see through “kapp”, they may roll up their sleeves if they wish and their skirts are not floor length. They don’t cover all but their face and hands even in public. Men wear hats but straw hats for everyday and work and they are allowed to be without them, they also can roll up their sleeves and they don’t “often” wear beards, the married men have beards, unmarried do not. They do go to amusement parks and other outings depending on their sect however they are polite and respectful and they understand they have to abide by certain “english” laws such as blinkers and reflective lights on their buggies for safety.

    • Bill

Hypothetically speaking your question makes no sense.

We will never stand for muslim law and female oppression therefore , I say to you, my ungrateful friend……… accept our laws and social mores and DEAL WITH IT!

  • Dik Itchi

Should’ve painted the rides the color of a pig so that some would not go near them. To further promote equality in our societies, let the Muslims build the Mosque at Ground zero alongside with a Giant Pork Store; a Synagogoue; a Christian Church and the Hustler Strip Club.

  • ericm

If you can’t abide by the rules of the ride – you can’t go on the ride. What’s next? Will midgets be saying that they deserve to go on rides that have a height requirement?
Sorry…if you can’t remove the headdress – you can’t get on the ride. No big deal. Safety first.

  • marcm

First of all, the park rule is faith-neutral and furthers a legitimate state interest in keeping people safe in a setting of heightened risk. Its constitutional and quite sensible. The obvious alternative for those offended by the rule is to simply not patronize the park.
As for the scuffles with the police, it should be a matter of common sense that if you engage a police officer in a physical altercation, you will likely end up face down on the ground, cuffed and under arrest. Police officers are rarely, if ever, in a position to slowly deliberate over the risk level of each confrontation of this sort. To cry foul because you were arrested after swinging at, shoving or actually hitting an officer is absurd. There are isolated occurrences of overzealous police confrontations. This does not appear to be one of them.
Finally, when you are publicly disruptive and clearly unreasonable in doing so, you will be dealt with by the authorities. Don’t cry anti-this or anti-that… you break the law, you get arrested. Muslims are just like anyone else, meaning they are subject to all of the same rules.

    • Yasser

Marcm, no one said that the girl engaged the Police physically. Actually it is quite the contrary. They had a loud exchange, and then he hit her down on the ground.

      • Noone is above the law

She should not of had a loud exchange because she was in the wrong from the start.Common sense tells you that headscarves are dangerous on rides and rules are rules . Next time wear a hoodie

  • LG

It was probably Louis Farrakahn and his posse.

  • Yasser

Of course every one is going by what the park deputy commissioner will say, do you think he will tell you the fair story of what happened??
First headscarves don’t fly like hats because it is tightly fixed. Second, we never heard of a woman choked by her own headscarf. I wonder if Jewish men wearing yamaka are also banned from that park? or Sikh with big turbines?? And when you read the story, there was a loud dispute between a security personnel and a Muslim teenager and the police man “PUSHED HER” on the ground and then arrested her. How fair is that??
And I bet over a million dollar if any instructions were given to the group organizers because there is no way on earth they will bring women to that place and expect them to take off their head scarves. This whole story, along with the hateful comments made by some above, just show the discrimination and hatefulness Muslim in this country are subject to every day. This just happens to be a whole lot of them at once.
Thank you America! You did it to the indian, then to the African blacks, then Italian and Irish and Jews, now it is Muslim turn!

    • Nan

Yaser, i’m jewish and if my boys ride any rides, they take OFF the yamakas because they will fly off. . Saftely comes first. There are rules at amusement parks in place for their safety and the safety of other park attendees. The women have the option not to patronize the park, if they feel it may compromise their modesty. They were offered refunds. It is very selfish of them to demand to go on rides where it may risk the safety of other peoples lives. It had nothing to do with religious persecution.

    • J

“Second, we never heard of a woman choked by her own headscarf.”
Read the below article. It seems to happen rather frequently actually.

      • Yasser

Thanks for the info. However, we hear some weird accidents every day. A man attacked by his own dog, a toddler die because of his own crib bedding, a man was killed in Cleveland cheering for the indians when a ball hit him in the “temple”, and million more! But they never banned dogs as pets, or bedding or baseball games! All you can do is make sure it is safer, take precautions. This same park had three deaths accidents in the past few years including 2 boys and a park worker.

      • Bill

Great link J. Unfortunately it appears that no amount of reason will change Yasser’s mind. I applaud your effort however.

    • IgnoranteElephante

      Yasser, you’re way off base.

I agree with you. No one should wear Yarmulkes, scarfs, kerchiefs, scarfs, turbins, or anything else that can be dangeroug.

Jews rule the world. Stop comparing their discrimination to the Irish or Blacks. They are reviled by some because of their uncanny dominance.

      • Bill

It is uncanny how some people choose their posting Name so wisely.

  • A

That’s because Muslim extremists make it a point to make sure everyone gets to see what they do. Funny how you never hear moderate Muslims telling the extremists to knock it off.

    Just saying.

  • Shery

Joe, that’s not funny. Muslims are as normal as anyone else. It’s not our fault there are crazy radicals out there. And just a reminder, every religion has extremists, but they’re not as highlighted in the media as the Muslim extremists.

    • Jason

The crazy Norwegians (an isolated act) point of view concerning muslim phobia is a concern for all the world as fanatical muslims have the least regard for human life whether it be Israeli, Americans, their own people, close family or strangers??
They have displayed their barbaric ways for the world to see over and over for many years the name Allah???
This (perception) is far from it as it is based on reality, whether they are acts by crazy muslim extremists , the sheer nummentionedber of them shows a inner problem within this culture that is far from minute as you infer.
I for one do not believe those peace loving muslims, supposedly the silent majority( so to speak) are trustworthy or sincere as they are too too quiet re: all this bloodshed.

    • Gene

Please provide examples of religious extremists of other religions and compare numbers.

      • Shery

Another example at the top of my mind: what happened in Norway about a month ago. Does this mean Norwegians are all terrorists? No. It means there was one troubled man living among them.

      • Gene

Numbers, Dave, numers. How many “martyrs” and murdered by “martyrs” per year per number of belivers of certain religion. No looking so good, right?

      • Shery
      • Dave

        Westboro Baptist Church

      • IgnoranteElephante

Norwegian, Sherry, is not a religion. That murderer killed out of hatred. He did not evoke religion.

The Westboro Baptists don’t murder in the name of religion. They express an opinion and use deplorable, offensive, and outrageous conduct to publicize it. Their actions, though vile and despicable, are usually legal and constitutionally protected, and don’t come close to the violence exerted by Arab Muslims.

  • skyline

If they want to ride, go to Dubai!

  • Joe

I’m just asking, but at Muslim theme parks, do they have any type of ride where you’re able to fly a toy plane into a toy building?

  • Robert Senn

this was a plan to harras the peopla at the park by the women
