East Meadow Man Pleads Not Guilty In Crash That Killed Off-Duty NYPD Cop

MASSAPEQUA, NY (CBSNewYork) — An East Meadow man who is accused of killing an off-duty NYPD officer in a crash on Long Island has pleaded not guilty.

Jonathan Lopez, 20, is charged with vehicular manslaughter, assault and DWI.

1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera reports: ‘We’re Devastated

The wreck happened on the Southern State Parkway early Sunday morning. State police say 25-year-old Kevin Jessup of Massapequa died in the three-car crash.

Authorities say Lopez hit Jessup’s car and then rear-ended a third vehicle.

Jessup’s girlfriend, 30-year-old Crystal Simons was a passenger in the car. She was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other car was treated and released.

“We’re devastated,” Jessup’s mother Dolores told 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera. “It’s hard right now.”

“I just hope justice is served,” Jessup’s brother Keith said.

Unfortunately I went to school with thus guy and when I heard what happened I honestly couldn’t say I was surprised. He was known as the crazy party kid with no ambition. So I put money on it he was drunk. I don’t know how he’ll be able to live with himself after all this.

      1. Unknown says:

Honestly I doubt that you even took the time to get to know Jon Lopez … Everyone is judging him by one mistake … Its people like you that should be ashamed to judge someone by what you hear, not what you know. Jon Lopez is just like any other teenage guy just having fun and made a huge mistake. If you fail to think that Jon feels guilt and sadness that he will live with for the rest of his life, you are totally wrong. Jon knows what he does, but I don’t think it’s fair for everyone to judge him and jump to conclusions about him based off this mistake. Did you ever ask Jon what he aspired to be? Did you ever sit down and get to know him? If you answered, no, it would be appreciated if you would discontinue the comments about knowing how he had no ambition…it just goes to show how ignorant people are.

Hopefully some big, muscular white supremacist will give Jon Lopez a lots of love in prison.

    1. Name Unknown says:

Yeaaaa, NOT GONNA HAPPEN! I hope this man walks free tomorrow! Nothing mentioned anymore on the cop who was drunk as well at the time? He is just as Guilty! The pigs sure love fat chicks and that Budweiser!!

  6. The Truth says:

enough of this drinking and driving,if you kill someone when you are drunk by driving needs to be a mininum of 10 years in prison,no less than that, these people need to face prision for what they do,a man just starting a life and career is dead because this idiot is drunk, funny this country worries about cocaine, crack, heroin, and marijuana and the legal drug alcohol is the worst thing ever created its a poison and look how many people die from alcohol related accidents more than any other drug.Laws need to be made stricter and cell phone laws too, after your 3rd ticket while driving or texting you lose your licencse for 60 days and if you get caught again,90 days and than 6 months and a year until people learn that a car is not a toy and its very dangerous, when you get into your car you suppose

    1. man says:

yes I agree you kill someone while drinking and driving it should be 10 years or more, these guys get off in 3 years, after killing someone

    2. Piotr says:

It’s all true but….there is not enough cops , at least in NYC to enforce it. Bloomerg got rid of 6000 police officers and now you can drive drunk as heck and talking on you cell , nobody will ever stop you.

    3. Nick says:

Too many cops and politicians are drunken sods. They will never pass nor enforce such a law.

  7. AlsoPapi says:

Just last Saturday, similar looking spic smashed 8 cars on Metropolitan Ave in Queens, no more than 20 years old dead drunk, crawled out of his car, looked around and drove away, possibly to kill someone.

    1. Johnny Handsome says:

@AlsoPapi: Why didn’t you stop the guy or get the plate number, wimp!

      1. AlsoPapi says:

Do you wan’t that plate number? I will give it to you. Together with his picture and picture of his car. I offered it the police but they didn’t care.

    2. randome says:

Dont say spic like that it could have happened to anyone race has nothing to do with this i know the kid he lives up the block from me and has never done anything like that before he just made a really BAD decission and just having to live with that is almost enough punishment alone…

      1. Piotr says:

Exactly. This one, big mistake ( plus bunch of smaller ones, like underage drinking) which he will pay for the rest of his life. Sad !

  8. M Aronsona says:

But wait a minute, what about all of the people the media says these heroes “saved” on 9/11 ?

    1. Just saying says:

Their not heros, that’s their job. Those reg Joes/civilians who ran up/helped in those buildings are the true heros…

  9. Solid Citizen says:

The police aren’t legally obligated to protect you according to Assistant Anne Arundel County Attorney Andrew J. Murray a few years ago in response to a egregious 911 snafuinvolving Yvette Beakes

Wonder how many of the other charges are immigration related .. pretty sketchy reporting

    Quo warranto, B.O.?

    1. Johnny Handsome says:

The police motto USE to be “To Protect and Serve”. That hasn’t been the case in years. Their role now is to investigate crime [check out the opening to Law and Order]. Once the powers that be realized there was so much money in locking people up, they decided to wait until the crime happened before the got involved. Ask any person who ever had to have an Order of Protection what the police role was in enforcing the order. The person had to pretty much have their hands around your neck before the cops could do something. The cops are not here to protect you. They are here to lock someone up after they’ve found your dead and bloody corpse.
