Report: Group Of Columbia University Students To Dine With Iranian President

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A group of Columbia University students are expected to have dinner with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad next week in Midtown.

According to the Columbia Spectator, the school’s newspaper, as many as 15 members of the Columbia International Relations Council and Association were invited.

CIRCA vice president of academics, Tim Chan, told the paper the Sept. 21 meeting is still tentative and none of the members expressed any reservations about breaking bread with the controversial Iranian leader.

Meanwhile, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, two American hikers jailed for over two years in Iran on espionage charges, could be freed “in a couple of days.”

An Iranian court has set bail at $500,000 for each of the men — the same arrangement that allowed fellow hiker Sara Shourd to go free a year ago.

The hikers all deny the charges and say they may have mistakenly crossed into Iran while hiking in Iraq’s Kurdish region.

On NBC’s ‘Today’ Show, Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that he hopes the release will improve relations with the U.S.

There’s speculation that Iran may have timed the potential release to coincide with Ahmadinejad’s visit to New York later this month for the United Nations General Assembly. Shourd was released last year just as Ahmadinejad made his way over for the annual gathering.

Ahmadinejad’s previous visits for the UN General Assembly have been the source of much controversy and sparked a number of protests.

During last year’s visit, he claimed that the United States was behind the 9/11 attacks.

“Some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attacks to reverse the declining economy and its grips on the Middle East in order to save the Zionist regime,” Ahmadinejad said.

President Barack Obama responded by saying, “It was offensive. It was hateful and particularly for him to make the statement here in Manhattan, just a little north of ground zero, where families lost their loved, ones was inexcusable.”

In trying to explain his 9/11 theories, Ahmadinejad said his real concern is for the poor American taxpayer, who after the terror attacks has been shelling out billions for the war on terror.

“We are trying to defend the rights of the American people here so their money is not used to kill people in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Ahmadinejad said.

Would you invite him over for dinner? What do you make of their invitation? Let Us know know below…

what a sad commentary on ivy-league liberals. classic “useful idiots”. they think they are so broad-minded and intellectual, breaking bread with a monster like ahmidanijad. to them, in the comfort of their own homes, they spout all kinds of high-minded moral and ethical ideas, yet when it comes to actually doing something about it, they reveal themselves to be the most insufferable, obnoxious utterly amoral idiots. they look down on the morals and ethics of “low-class, gun-toting yeehaws” down south or in red states, but at least those yeehaws have the moral fiber to know that eating with this monster is wrong. ugh- these intellectuals make me sick.

Dining with Ahmadinejad . This is an obvious attempt by Ahmadinejad to get publicity and perhaps increase his standing vis-a-vis the ruling clergy in Iran. Still, I believe that the students should meet with yhim. Look at the results of his last visit. Agroup of students and some professors clearly demonstrating the disrespect felt for a worlkd leader. Candid critism in the media cannot be a public relations plus for Ahmadinejad .

  3. Jim says:

Ask the Iranian president why his country continues to hold the 2 American hikers hostage. What is it with Iran and hostages?

  4. Vincenzo says:

go for it dudes!!!! Rat poison in the caviar………………

  5. DCLaw-1 says:

The students and faculty at Columbia view the disgust of normal people as empowering. The little people (a term a liberal relation of mine uses to describe those who do not appreciate fine wine and libberal poliitics) do not have the intellect to understand the importance of listening to, and accepting the worldview of dictators and despots. These students and their professors believe that they are furthering understanding and bringing nations together, not that they are being used as a propoganda tool by a sociopath. In the mind of the Columbia community, all of those who vocally oppose this meeting are intellectually stunted and uneducated; they are little people.

    Madness. Stark-raving madness.

“Some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attacks to reverse the declining economy and its grips on the Middle East in order to save the Zionist regime”

That’s just crazy talk. This man is a dangerous lunatic and so must be all of these anti-semitic conspiracy theorists:

There are multiple studies that find that liberals were verbally abused during childhood, causing their clouted reasoning later in adulthood.

  9. john says:

We should arrest this iranian president this guy is an itiot like all these other muslim dictators he uses the jews and israel to distract his people from his brutal dictatorship this is very common in the muslim world just like the liberals just blame everything on israel and the jews

  10. Trevor says:

When these morons sit down to eat with this degenerate will they ask him why his country murders gay people? Will they ask why gay youth are hung on ropes in front of hundreds of people? Will they ask why religious leaders are torturing and killing those who oppose the religious laws that demean Iranians? Will they ask him why he murders and tortures the youth who protest the fitly and corrupt government? Will they ask why he murders artists, poets, and actors?

I hope these so called students have to guts to ask hard questions but we all know they won’t. They will grovel at his feet in adoration as his fellow countrymen (and women) continue to be murdered and tortured while they dine together. DISGUSTING!

  11. Tom Bombadil says:

i wonder if the Iranian ‘leader’ will require that Columbia not seat any students who are jews? (after all Columbia is in Jew York City) Given the man’s profligate remarks about destroying Israel…. jus sayin…

  12. Matt Sullivan says:

Columbia has become a cesspool of self loathing, America hating and Islamist loving commies.. Can you say “WATERBOARD” when ah ma dinner jacket sets down at JFK? He would fold like a cheap camera; that sorry piece of humanity! It would break the back of the Iranian Revolution!!! Maybe after the water party he can be tried for his participation in the storming of the American Embassy in Tehran and crimes against humanity. Oppsl, that is right, our “fearless” Columbia graduate is in charge. Forget about it for now. Ah ma dinner jacket would not be visiting if Perry, Palin, Bachman or Reagan were president.

  13. Robyn D says:

What a scandal. Is anyone surprised. Columbia is an embarrassment to America and academia.

  14. Michael Rubin says:

I would definitely have I’m a Dinner Jacket, I mean, Ahmadinejad over for dinner. I would serve him pork laced with strychnine, arsenic, lye and some other fine delectable delights!

  15. dred says:

How could these students tolerate the stench of the grubby little toad? Oh wait, they’re liberals, they don’t bathe either.

  16. bridger says:

    “students are expected”

Group of students is singular, not plural. Moron. A group of students “is” expected…

  17. John says:

Sure, why not? How ’bout tea with Mussolini or and some wienerschnitzel with Hitler to round out the weekend? I mean I guess I would meet with the guy if he were willing to take my criticism of his views on the holocaust and Israel but to sit down and politely break bread with him? To smile and nod and laugh at his jokes? How revolting. I am ashamed for Columbia University.

    1. bridger says:

Exactly, I strongly suspect these students will sit about, frantically trying to be non-judgmental and acting star struck..

  18. chukalukabus says:

For those who bother to check it out, The Franfurt School essentially relocated to Colmbia U. in WWII. And of course Colmbia is where obama went to what amounts to a communist finishing school. This rag head punk is probably a hero to his future dining mates. They are brothers in arms in their hatred of the USA.

  19. mirted says:

Not surprising, is it? Could also have been Harvard, Yale, etc., any of the 7 Sisters.
Wonder if any of the Jewish folks who endow these places will pull them in the near future. I am truly surprised he’s not being feted at UC Berkeley. Perhaps, with Code Pink hosting.

  20. Very conservative says:

    Liberalism is a mental disorder.

  21. Leslie says:

Will any female students be included? Will they be given equal status to the male students?

  22. John C says:

Columbia University is well known for it’s support of liberal-progressive (socialist/communist) anti-American policies.

    1. mirted says:

These supposed institutions of higher learning will excoriate, protest and cancel conservative speakers who merely have an opposing point of view, but welcome despots like this under the banner of diversity and free thinking. What hypocrites.
I encourage all LGBT. feminist folks and those who think it is their ultimate right to say, do and act out however outrageously, to join an exchange program with the university in Iran. Perhaps Iranian military families could host them.

  23. mike says:

You’re and idiot. Republicans and Teaparty people don’t have a problem with the gay community. They do have a problem with idiots that say they have a problem with the gay community. I work with gay people, live next to gay people, socialize with gay people. I am a republican and have never heard a bad word spoken by a republican about the gay community.
