Police To Be Among 1,000 To Be Laid Off In Nassau County

MINEOLA, NY (WCBS 880) – There is nothing positive to report with the 2012 proposed budget in Nassau County.

WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall On The Story

County Executive Ed Mangano plans to lay off another 700 workers, including those at the police department.

Those 700 are on top of an already planned cut of 300 workers.

He also plans to have workers pay 25 percent of their health insurance costs as well as take police officers out of desk jobs and put them on the streets, while closing two police precincts.

“This budget is not a scare tactic. It is reality. It is what many counties are facing across the country. Our residents are at the end of their rope with respect to paying additional taxes,” said Mangano.

Mangano said there will be no property tax increases.

Some museums may also close because of the county’s budget woes.

The county faces a $310 million budget gap.

What do you think Nassau County should o about its budget woes? Sound off below.

In Plainview, NY – Cops from both the 2nd & 8th precincts live at the Firehouse on Old Country Road. Once and awhile they respond to a vehicle accident or a residential alarm. Who cares how many are laid off. However, I bet NOT one will be let go.

Spoken like someone who doesn’t know your *** from your elbow. Make sure you don’t call the police when you need help then.

      1. Meme Meyagi says:

yes chris, heaven forbid you will be separated from eating doughnuts all day long. and no way you are getting interrupted from yapping on cell phone while speeding to get free doughnut refills.

  2. Love the Police! says:

It’s amazing how uninformed most of you are about police salaries and benefits. Would you put on a bulletproof vest and a gun belt every day and work for minimum wage with no benefits? I don’t think anyone would work that way in ANY job, and I for one would not want to live in a county with less officers protecting us. How about we stop picking on Police Officers and lay the blame where it really belongs…with the politicians like Ed Mangano who laid off 125 CSEA workers only to replace them with over 100 members of his family and friends in patronage jobs. I agree that politicians are the ones that have to go!

    1. Ronald Daliston says:

Oh please, in nassau county the make 150,000 plus to sit in office and b/shh all day, believe me I know, they work for 20 years then the local homeowners are on the hook for 80,000 a year in lifetime benefits plus health insurance for life. give me a break with your sob story, they are bankrupting the county and making it impossible for everyday people to pay their property taxes. Pay what the market dictates, like any other business. If they don’t want to bring their compensation level down to the norm for a civil servant, there is no other option than to let some of them go.

      1. Paul says:

I agree they are paid too much why do they have to be the highest paid in the whole country???

      2. Love the Police! says:

Have you ever really looked at your tax bill? I have and SCHOOL taxes make up 3/4 of the taxes we pay…you pay more for your entertainment in a year (Cablevision, etc.) than you do for your police. Mine is not a sob story…it’s reality and you should wake up and do your homework before spouting off about subjects that you have absolutely NO idea about.

      3. Chris says:

I guess you don’t really know what it costs to live in Long Island then and support a family Mr. Paul. Its a chicken and the egg problem.

    2. Meme Meyagi says:

if you love police so much, move to a police state. security guards get paid $8 per hour without benefits and bulletproof vests. so cry me me a river fkn leech.

      1. Love the Police! says:

Sounds like you need to move back to whatever country you came from where they have Police states…or crawl back into your hole. No officers I know eat doughnuts and your comments make you seem like an uninformed ass who believes anything they hear or read. Bet you’re a lover of the liberal rag Newsday too and believe everything they print. God help us if there are more idiots out there like you.

  3. Ed Valence says:

I don’t think the taxpayers care about paying a itttle more for the museums, they don’t want more overpaid cops, get rid of the cops, keep the museums, it doesn’t have to be a package deal, don’t give us the b/st mr mangano, last year they tried to prove a point by closing out parking lots at jones beach, the people aren’t stupid mr mangano, we know your family is half over paid cops and you are in bed with the pba.

  4. Meme Meyagi says:

gee how did people protect themselves before cops, gotta think about that. but politicians got to go too

  5. white boy mike says:

i,m about to get g off in nassau lay off police

  6. Gloria says:

Lay off the politicans and keep the police officers! There is a reason that Nassau County is considered one of the safest counties in the US andthats because of our police force! Kepp our police officers!

    1. Meme Meyagi says:

keep drinking kool aid. you are safer because lees nubians live in nassau county. not for long though

  7. Lawn-Guy Land says:

“He also plans to. . . take police officers out of desk jobs and put them on the streets….”

You mean, like, having cops “serve and protect”actual PEOPLE instead of DESKS? Is that legal?

  8. Concern says:

Unions can raises money for charity using Charity Search Engines.

  9. Kate of New Hyde Park says:

Before laying off one single cop, please get rid of the way-too-many useless politicians in Nassau County including the entire NC legislature, their infinite assistants and staff, the state legislators, state assemblyman, this “official” that “official”, village mayors, deputy mayors, trustees, board members, all their incompetent family and friend appointees, etc.

Trust me, every Nassau resident is hoping and praying that NIFA does a complete overhaul of the county government and they get rid of at least 75% of the dysfunctional politicians and their staff personnel…then you will see a huge surplus budget and not one working cop will have to be laid off.

    1. Fed Up in Franklin Square says:

Wow! What a GREAT COMMENT. Hey Gov. Cuomo are you reading this? Do something now before Nassau County goes down the tubes.

  10. Stan says:

I GUESS I JUST HAVE TO BUY MORE AMMO

  11. SAN MAN FROM QUEENS says:

THE FAT DRIPS FROM THE TOP DOWN TO THE BOTTOM……. I’M SURE THERE ARE PLENTY OF POSITIONS THAT CAN GET CUT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO CUT JOBS START AT THE TOP AND WORK YOUR WAY DOWN. LET’S DOWNSIZE MANAGEMENT FIRST BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER REDUCE THIER WORK FORCE OR GET RID OF JOBS THEIR FRIEND OR RELATIVES HAVE. FOR EVERY MANAGAMENT JOB PAYING AT $150,000.00 YOU GET RID OF, YOU WOULD SAVE 2 COPS DRIVING AROUND PROTECTING THE TAX PAYER. DO THE MATH!!!!!!!!

    1. Tommy says:

the cops in Nassau make more than $150K with benefits, so your argument does not hold water.

      1. Lawn-Guy Land says:

Some of them make $150K to protect DESKS instead of PEOPLE.

      2. Carpenter says:

Desks are pretty expensive these days!!! They need protection.

  12. aha says:

    Lay off the politicians

  13. Step up Nassau Cops! says:

Get the Police out of the Firehouses and there will 100 more Cops on the street.every day. I’m pretty sure not one Cop will be layed off. They will ly off civilians who get payed much less and probably work much harder. Crime in Nassau goes up because many of the Cops (not all) are lazy and don’t want to look for crime, they just want to take reports after the crime was committed.

  14. ConcernedCitizen13 says:

Smart… cut the police and continue to not allow people to defend themselves. Crime in Nassau is about to take a sharp uptick. Mark my words.
