NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Staten Island man is under arrest Thursday for opening fire in what is supposed to be a sanctuary for children.
Police said one of the several shots 19-year-old Damark King fired Wednesday afternoon in an apartment complex playground and courtyard hit 18-month-old Samaya Bailey in the head.
“It’s heartbreaking. It’s a baby. It’s my niece,” said Samaya’s aunt, Christine Bailey.
The child’s stroller was cordoned off by crime scene tape and marks the location where police say, the child was caught in the crossfire. Police said the stroller was stained with blood.
“It was a senseless shooting. An innocent baby got shot, being outside playing, on a nice day,” said Patricia Mahoney, Samaya’s grandmother.
The child was taken to Richmond University Medical Center. A police chase resulted in officers taking four suspects into custody for questioning.
Police said their black sedan matched the description given by witnesses at the crime scene.
The NYPD believes King had a dispute with the toddler’s uncle, who was standing near her in the playground.
“I agree with them getting the guns off the streets. But it’s not happening fast enough. When is it going to stop? Enough is enough,” said Mahoney.
