Giants’ Kevin Gilbride ‘Wanted’ Steve Smith, Settles For Brandon Stokley

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride was hoping for wide receiver Steve Smith.

He’ll have to settle instead for Brandon Stokley, thanks to the “powers above” him.

“We had wanted all along Steve Smith back and that was the objective, that was the hope and the expectation,” Gilbride said after Big Blue announced the Stokley signing. “But when that didn’t happen, then we have two young guys that we think can do it. How fast will they be able to evolve into the experienced receiver that you need at that spot where everything is happening so quickly inside? The powers above me made that decision and we needed to add this additional receiver.”

Is there a controversy brewing?

“That comment appeared to be directed at GM Jerry Reese,” the New York Post’s Bart Hubbuch wrote on Thursday.

The Giants’ lack of depth in the slot was evident in the 28-14 season-opening loss to the Redskins in Washington. They were a woeful 1 of 10 on third-down opportunities and the bad performance started on the opening drive, when second-year pro Victor Cruz dropped a wide-open pass on third down.

The depth at the receiver position also got a little murky when leading wideout Hakeem Nicks bruised his left knee. Nicks said Thursday that his leg is feeling better and he expects to take part in the team portion of practice on Friday.

It’s not all Smith-wishing for Gilbride.

“I feel pretty good about this particular guy because he is an intelligent guy who has shown the quickness that you need to react to with all the different variables,” Gilbride said. “I think he will bring something to the table that we are looking forward to having, and what we were really in need of since Steve Smith’s injury.”

Coach Tom Coughlin hopes Stokley can be ready for Monday night’s game against the Rams. The advantage is he has 12 years experience with Baltimore, Indianapolis, Denver and Seattle.

He started both of the Seahawks’ playoff games last season, in fact, and had 12 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Do you think Gilbride’s comments are a big deal? Sound off below…

The Giants are normally a conservative organization top to bottom. That being said, WE need to divest ourselves of the wacky play-calling of Gilbride ,. We have a well-above average running game yet KILLBRIDE constanly calls pass plays . We need to get back to GIANT football establish the RUN to set up the pass.Power the ball w/Jacobs , up the middle Bradshaw off the corner screens, draws quick slants , mix it up . Please get RID of Killbride .

  4. Steven Monty says:

The Giants are rotten from the top down and it starts with ownership. The Giants will never pay for the best free agents or go after the best coaches and players as long as the Mara family controls the purse strings. Thats why you see them doing so much reaching in the draft for players no other team wants. Did anyone really believe we would be able to replace Steve Smith with a rookie like Jernigan or a long shot like Cruz!!! Its a shame that Reese gets all the heat from the fans when its the bums that own the team that are to blame. Wouildn’t it be nice if we had an owner like Bob Kraft who said to his coach and GM … whatta ya need … we’ll get them.

LMAO The Giants just won a SB and you’re saying ownership is a problem. Go to the hospital for they can shutdown your incompetent brain.

  6. ROUBY says:

Hopefully Reese fires this bozo. The most incompetent Giants staff member since RAY HANDLEY!

    1. Michael Sicilia says:

Coughlin is a good head coach who has been dealt a bad hand in that he is stuck with a front office that hasn’t gotten with the times, and he has a QB in Eli Manning that I’m not even sure he wanted.

  7. BleacherCreature26 says:

lets get back to it. Bradshaw is right – LETS RUN THE FOOTBALL

  8. Matt says:

Kevin Gilbride, proving week after week that stupid people can keep a job even in this economy.

  9. KPMc says:

And I wished for an OC that has the slightest sense for what wins game in the NFC East, e s p e c i a l l y in the Northeast as the season goes on. An effective running game.

    1. KPMc says:

But we got Kevin Gilbride from the powers above. Oh well.

Gilbride consistently s n a t c h e s defeat from the jaws of victory with his nonsensical play calling.
