Tony Bennett Apologizes Again For 9/11 Remarks

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Tony Bennett has again addressed his controversial remarks made to Howard Stern regarding 9/11 attacks on America.

Bennett, 85, appeared on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM show on Monday night to promote his upcoming release “Duets II.” The conversation took a bizarre turn after Stern asked Bennett, a veteran of World War II, how the United States should deal with the terrorists who were responsible for destroying the World Trade Center.

“They flew the plane in but we caused it,” Bennett said. “Because we were bombing them and they told us to stop.” He also asked Stern, “Are we the terrorists or are they the terrorists? Two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Bennett apologized for his remarks on his Facebook page.

Appearing on ABC’s “The View,” Bennett was asked about his comments. He produced a card and read from it.

“I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world,” the singer said, echoing his statement on Facebook.

“Nobody loves America more than I do,” Bennett said, reading from the card.

On his Facebook page, Bennett wrote “My life experience… made me a life-long humanist and pacifist, and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is the lowest form of human behavior.”

That said, not everyone is pleased with the apology. On his Facebook page, some were critical.

“My brother died in one of those buildings, and frankly you are so off base in your views of who the terrorists are, I now question your patriotism,” wrote Ron Bogdan of Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

“Nice statement by your publicist, however, we heard you loud and clear on the Stern program,” wrote Brian Eades of Omaha, Neb. “You clearly equate U.S. actions with those of the terrorists and said the U.S. somehow caused 9/11. The 3,000 people that died that day were innocent people. They were murdered in cold blood. Nothing – no matter what you can point to in U.S. policy over the years – justifies what was done or somehow mitigates the tragedy.”

What do you think of Tony Bennett’s comments and apology? Sound off below.

  • Raymond Schwab

Once again a public figure is cowed about concerns that 9/11 isn’t as simple as people would like it to be. You who hate what Tony has said because of direct links to WTC demonstrate an awful aversion to truth which is a dishonor to those who have lost. Do you not want the real perpetrators caught? Or do you continue wishing that your deceased friends and relatives be used as propaganda for a blood soaked, war torn government that is out of control? To bad Tony caved to pressure.

  • Joe

Tony is living proof that if you live long enough you will make a public “Jackass” out of yourself…But Who will pick-up the pieces of you??

  • Carole J.

Now he tells me! Had I known who he was forty years ago, I would never had purchased his music or concert tickets through the years. Now at 85, he is richer because of the Americans he chooses to offend.

  • Dennis D

This is what happens after spending a lifetime in the left wing entertainment industry. Decades of brainwashing

  • barkley pontree

I’ve taken care of both of my parents in their old age and there comes a point where you can’t take what they say seriously. The ages are different for any person, but by 85, both could say some pretty crazy things. History is full of such examples. Martin Luther wrote some nasty stuff the last couple of years of his life that completely contradicted his life’s work, but Hitler used those comments to justify the treatment of Jews in Germany.

So, from my experience, when people have hit their 80’s, it’s time to quit taking everything they say as serious. The brain ain’t functioning properly anymore.

  • Brad

Ok Tony….Who were we bombing in September 2001?…..I don’t know either. Liberals love to use fabricated history to support their beliefs. They then expect the Dumbmasses to just believe what they are saying. Its getting really tiresome.

  • boB

Note that Tony didn’t state he was WRONG. He only stated that he didn’t want it to be thought that he didn’t love his country. He clearly thinks our actions in defense of this country equate to the bombings. I’m SO disappointed in him and will not think of hiim the same way again or watch him sing again.

  • Dorothy

Tony Bennett is irrevelant and he equates Money with Brains. Never listened to him, so I rank him down there with other irrevelant celebs such as Streisand, Hanks, Goldberg, and Speilberg. Plus, he’s apparently lost his marbles.

  • Charles

Is that “war is the lowest form of human behavior” as in “worse than pedophilia? Rape? Driving drunk and killing an innocent family?
So war is worse than flying a plane into buildings killing 3000 innocent unaware people simply because of our actions in a declared war where the enemy knows who and where we are and why we are there??
Old man, you’ve outlived your usefulness…

  • Sparky2

America did not attack Al Qaida without reason, the reaon being the bombing of the marine barracks and embassy and killing of other American in many other countries..only because we were American, Jewish and Christian…plus we supported Israel…who also never attacked anyone unless they were attacked first. Tony is too rapped up in the liberal genre of Hollywood and New York city. A foolish remark and it totally changed my opinion of him to the bad.

  • Sentry Virginia

These Dem celebs keep messing up. They require the blind worship that the Dem’s drones give them. When they expose their Lib-hood, their record sales dive and America places them on the same level of Jimmy Swagart.. Good job Stern (A liberal with who values exposing BS beyond his idology, just like South Park.)

  • azc

Actually, Tony didn’t go far enough. If most of you incredibly uninformed people commenting here would investigate what was actually behind 9/11, you’ll find some very disturbing truths.

I dare you, who have no better argument than to call people names, to read what the many, many high-level military personnel, scientists, architects, structural engineers, pilots, and other professionals, have to say about 9/11 at But I bet most of you will refuse to find out the REAL facts.

  • Mannie

If Bennett is a pacifist, then he is of a lower moral order than child rapists. So called pacifists, really mostly anti-American agitators, have been responsible for over 200 million murders in the past 100 years. Good work, scum. They should be spat on at every opportunity.

As far as what Bennett said, who cares? He’s only a singer. Shut up and sing.

Have you spit on a pacifist today?

  • Josh Brogan

Now that this never was singer has stirred up some publicity for his latest (last ?) album we can go about continuing to ignore him?

This alleged singer had one song which made the big time in his career and has done small show rooms around the country ever since.

Who really cares what he thinks ABOUT ANYTHING ? He is not a scholar, a thinker, a humanitarian, a Patriot or anything of value… just a club singer with a full head of hair and an empty brain. Get real people get real.

  • Clint

Another idiot New Yorker labeling terrorists as the moral equivalents of the U.S. military. That’s just wrong. When you call them on it, they fall back on patriotism. News flash Tony—it’s imbeciles like you who are the problem. SHUT UP AND SING.

  • Ray

Mr. Bennett’s remarks on 9/11 attacks on America are one way of looking at it.
He has remarkable talent as an entertainer. Not so sure about his credibility
    as a political commentator.

  • Wildey Moore

What did Tony Bennet say that was wrong? TERROR: A physical or psychological commtted with violence to gain submission. Isn’t our presence in many countries to do just that. We had been bombing Iraq for ten years killing people and destroying their infrastructure. We had a military presence in Saudi Arabia and the people hated us for it. Would you welcome a foreign military presence in America? My family on both sides traces their lineage back before the American Revolution. Does that mean anything when America’s on the road to Empire? It’s been said people won’t look for a cure until they realize they’re sick. America’s sick politically and morally. Should we not admit it?

    • azc

Great comment, Wildey Moore — but unfortunately it will go over the heads of most of the commenters here. They will simply continue with their personal attacks on Mr. Bennett, because they have no cogent argument against his statement.

Tony only scratches the surface of our real foreign policy, and the resource sucking, wealth depleting monster known as the Military Industrial Complex.
But I’m wasting my breath with most of this crowd.

  • Patriot

    Right on Tony!

When are we going to stop letting Israel run our foreign policy??

Tony said what we all know is true!

  • jb

He’s just another Limousine Liberal. Rich, out of touch and parroting the things told to them by the NY Times.

I heard it live on Sirius and was disgusted but not surprised. Suddenly, I dont care for him as much.

  • Thomas

OK Tony, so what is next, a statement that you misspoke in the claim that GW told you he made a mistake by invading Iraq, that is an outright lie and and anyone who knows President Bush knows you are a liar. What a shame it is to learn that an American icon is full of $#!%.

  • Brutus00

Classic non-apology apology. He skirts the real point, that he said we’re terrorists and the attacks were a result of “bombing”. He drew moral equivalence between us and them.

Well, you can argue that, but you can’t equate someone purposely attaking civillians at work with deaths that occur when trying to hunt down terrorists.

They weren’t flying into that building hoping to kill military people and a few civilians got hit. They were going for terror, pure and simple. You can argue our presence in the middle east is unwise. But that doesn’t make us “terrorists”.

Tony is the worst kind of “patriot”. He was in WWII because he got drafted, period. He saw terrible things but doesn’t want to admit that the worst stopped only because brave men and women died fighting to make it stop. He implied he didn’t fire at the enemy, even if that meant his comrades might get hit because of that. He loves the liberty and peace the world has, but ignores what makes that possible. The Tonys of the world would have turned their Jews over to Hitler, as long as he left them alone “in peace”. Peace is fine till the bullies come for you next.

That folks, is the result not of 6 months of WWII experience 66 years ago, but of spending the last 66 years in a bubble of show business adoration where we all eat cotton candy and everyone loves you and there is no crime or terrorism or racial struggle for control. War is indeed horrible and to be avoided when you can. But when you can’t you need to do something about it, not wuss out like Tony.

He says we should arrest those who manufacture and sell guns. I wonder if uneducated Tony realizes that it’s estimated that 1% of humans are psychopaths, devoid of any humanity, who would kill you and not bat an eye. And maybe 5% are varying degrees of criminally disturbed. He can afford to live in mansions, hotels, and fancy apartments with security. The poor single mother or widow living in the terrible neighborhood is just screwed in his world vision. She should just agree to be bludgeoned to death or raped by the stronger man rather than shoot him or warn him off with her gun, becasue Tony wants to feel good about himself being a “pacifist”. Africans being murdered and kidnapped in the Sudan and elsewhere should just submit because Tony feels good being a pacifist. It must be great to live in Tony’s world.

  • John Tokalenko

Mystery Babylon America is the number one terrorist state in the world. Period.

      A haaaaaaaaaa ha!!!!!!!!!

  • JD

Tony no need to apologize. Even the 9/11 commission report agrees with you that our meddling foreign policy was a major motivation for the terrorists. It is time we mind our own business, quit overthrowing dictators. Has anyone considered that maybe some of these countries do not want to be a democracy? We have troops stationed all over the world, some from wars won 65 years ago. We can secure S Korea’s border but can’t secure our own. And we are financing this on the backs of future generations. Support our troops, bring them home from all over the world.

  • John

    what a fonzanoon.

  • stockpig

Tony: Just shut up about your beliefs. Just sing. Otherwise retire.

  • Jullou

There is a lot of misinformation on 911 all to promote leftism, socialism and communism. A lot of the people that believe this have been brainwashed, Read world history to see what is happening today.

  • Michelangelo

No fool like an old fool… double if you are a leftie yahoo from the “performing arts”. Next time, just shut your sorry trap. Where are you from? Ah, yes, southern Italy, where you would be chasing rats and sucking lemons.

  • Jullou

Too bad. I always liked his voice, but no more “I left my heart in San Francisco” for me.

Tony, you need to do research before you make such loony statements!

  • johnrmcc

I used to be a big fan but no longer. What a shame.

  • marc

almost all of the perpetrators of 911 are dead

wake up people, what we do now just creates more terror/ists

    • clint

no…duh…killing the perpetrators mean LESS terrorists.

  • Proud American

    Screw you Mr. Bennett!

  • Deuce

Take your apology and shove it TB. You’ve made several blame America first comments before. You’re not a smart man.

  • LochLdy

One of my all time favorite quotes came from Louis B. Mayer of old Hollywood fame. He adamantly informed his stars,”If you want to send a message use Western Union.” Nothing angers me more than to know I’ve helped to support the extravagant lifestyle of some singer or actor (by spending my money on them) only to have them open their mouth and trash a good half of their fans (the ones of differing views) by spouting their beliefs as fact. My Tony Bennett albums are now “keyed” and in the local landfill.

  • Maury

The number of sayanim’s on this list appears to be endless, or it’s the same 5 12 yearolds in some Yeshiva. Regardless, anyone who has investigated the 9/11 Inside job knows that:

    1) Cheney needed a war to boost Haliburton Earnings, and his Stock Options, Price. Eventually, to the tune of 8 Million dollars

    2) Marvin Bush, the presidents brother, was in charge of Security at WTC for a few years before 9/11, just long enough to imbed the building with bombs.

    3) Bomb Sniffing Dogs were removed from the WTC just under 2 weeks from 9/11.

    4) Silverstien is ON RECORD, ON CAMERA, stating that he decided to
pull it”, meaning blow up WTC7. It takes weeks to set up an implosion. Apparently WTC7 being imploded was in the works for weeks. Evidence for Enron and other investigations was stored in that building.

    5) Cheney made sure that the plan hit the Pentagon. An Aid asked him, several times, if the orders (to standdown) still stand. He said yes, several times. Minetta is on record as an eye witness.

    6) No Plane hit the Pentagon, that was a rocket. There was no plan debree, unless the plan both shrunk, then disintegrated, upon impact. I am sure it disintegrated on impact, since the accountants who were trying to figure out where 2.3 Billion dollars disappeared to where working RIGHT WHERE the plane hit the Pentagon. All evidence had to disappear. It was a bomb.

But you sayanim’s keep on bashing Tony Bennett. Just remember, you aren’t worth the toilet paper Tony throws away when he wipes his ass.

The caliber of people who KNOW that 9/11 was an inside job is unquestionable.

  • prutt

    investigate building 7 folks ….smoking gun ….inside job !
i bet most of you dont even know a 3rd building(47 stories) fell that day without a plane hitting it . NYFD were filmed saying get back they are going to blow up the building. infowars . com

He’s a confused old man who doesn’t know which end is up. That’s why he is speaking out of his butt and crap is coming out of his mouth.

One word describes it all: “pacifist”. And like others have questioned: Hey Tony, who were we bombing at the time? He probably has Code Pink on speed dial.

He needs to whip out a card to read a so-called apology from? Someone else must have written it. He didn’t need to read from a card when he was talking to Stern.

The military industrial academic complex is terrorism plain and simple. They are controlled by luciferians who want to eliminate 85%+ of the worlds population. 911 is the most important issue facing our country since the Civil War. It needs a lot more discussion – grown up discussion – honest and open discussion.

There is a LOT more to the story than the official one.

Tony – you are still awesome in my book and always will be.

That is why our country is being Judged now,It started on 9/11/01. People are so ignorate of our meddling in the middle east countries for 100 years.

Why do people of our country think we are without sin? Instead of us repenting of our sins we chose to add sin on sin by bombing the hell out of more innocent peoples.

God bless America- Judgement starts with those who claim to be righteous, and the raptures not going to save you. Acts 3:26

He read from a card, most likely prepared by his agent or publicist who probably told Tony that if he didn’t do this his sales would drop and he would loose fans. He lost me, the idiot. Why do so many entertainers get involved with politics? He is a “humanist”, says Karen. I assume that then he is pro life. If not, he isn’t much of a “humanist” in my view.
