Officials: Subway Crime On The Rise In New York City

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – All of those cellphones and portable gadgets are proving to be catnip to thieves.

Officials say 1,000 subway riders have been the victims of larceny from January to August this year. During the same period last year, 787 people were robbed.

Riders tell 1010 WINS’ Terry Sheridan about crimes they’ve witnessed on the subways

According to Owen Monaghan, assistant chief with the NYPD’s Transit Bureau, 46 percent of all crime in the subway system takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“You would think we’re back in the 80s all over again,” one straphanger told 1010 WINS’ Terry Sheridan.

As part of Operation Total Impact, the NYPD is going to flood the subway system with both uniformed and undercover officers — especially over the weekend — to try to reverse the 17 percent jump in crime on the rails.

Thieves have been particularly focused on stealing electronic devices, but that’s not the only type of crime going down underground. Just last week, there was a robbery and sex assault on the F train in Brooklyn and a suspected female slasher attacking woman riding on the 4 train in the Bronx.

The statistics were revealed just as cell phone service was becoming available at four subway stops.

Thank you’s for making the subways rife for criminals goes back as far as the Lindsay administration and the TWU.

  2. NYC was my home says:

NYC is better when it’s dangerous. People respect it more. Right now, these self-entitled transplants walk around this city like they’ve conquered it. They have no understanding or respect for these streets. GO HOME PLEASE!

    1. Le Nwwaert says:

I wish all these third world illegals that are responsible for a lot of the crime and stealing city services would leave…These “transplants” cause little to no crime..speak English..pay taxes and are a plus for this city..unless you are an ignorant fool that loves crime..you will know that “transplants” benefit this city

New York City is becoming like 1977! Crime has increased not only on subways, but in all neighborhoods. So, I say, watch your ass and always carry ‘something’ just in case of rape/assault. In the case of robbery, give up your items – it’s not worth your life. Don’t flash your devices on the subways. And don’t take the trains too late at night or too early in the morning if you can help it!

    1. Nick 9075 says:

NYC is hardly as dangerous as 1987 let alone 1977. Now its all these 20 something transplants spending $3,000 a month to rent a studio apartment and every store is Duane Reade, Chase Bank or CVS. If you aren’t rich, don’t work on wall street with making $250,000 a year base salary you don’t fit in anywhere.

      1. Clark says:

Now Nick 9075, what does your monthly rent have t o do with getting robbed on the subway?

        1. Sam says:

Clark, don’t be so fcuking naive. Working-class, real NY’ers can no longer afford to live in their own city. NY is is now being built for fragile, self-entitled, over-educated idiots who only want to be here temporarily to “experience” NYC life. These are the people who are in jeopardy most of being robbed.

      2. Head Up says:

You’re absolutely correct my friend. New York is no longer for New Yorkers.

  4. Joe Schmo says:

Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but I agree with your overall point.

  5. Wig Wam Willie says:

Crime BELONGS in the subway system. That’s why REAL New Yorkers drive everywhere.

  6. NYC42A says:

Crime is up throughout the city. What can you expect when you have a bad economy, increased drug abuse, and poor policies that don’t give people the ability to protect themselves?

    1. Nick 9075 says:

Bad economy?? You wouldn’t know it with rents that keep going up and stores that & restaurants that are always packed. It seems like there was never a recession to begin with anywhere in the NYC metro area.

  7. NYPDrP I G S says:

FDNY r DRUNKEN PIRATES. Oink oink ARRRRRR!!

  8. Shahan says:

What do you expect when they keep removing station attendants? Of course crime was going to go up. The more services they cut, the more crime will go up. They’re not going to be able to keep up with undercover cops.

  9. Head Up says:

I’m sure a contributing factor is all of the yuppies, hipsters and transplants with no street smarts that have invaded our city. The make for easy marks. Maybe if they went back where they came this statistic would decline.

    1. Le Nwwaert says:

ACTUALLY IF THE IGNORANT WELFARE ABUSING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND THE OTHER MINORITIES LEFT THIS WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER CITY…I’D RATHER HAVE 1000 TRANSPLANTS THAT SPEAK ENGLISH AND PAY TAXES AND OBEY LAWS THEN A BUNCH OF ILLEGALS OR WELFARE QUEENS THAT DESTROY EVERY COMMUNITY THEY INHABIT

      1. MULTICULTURALISM SUX says:

        Le Nwwaert

You sound like my kind of man
