Yankees Release ALDS Roster; Tigers Take 5 Starters Into Series

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — The Yankees will go with three starters for their American League Division Series matchup against Detroit.

As for the Tigers? They put five starting pitchers on the roster.

Manager Jim Leyland has already said Justin Verlander, Doug Fister and Max Scherzer are his first three starters against the Yankees. The roster also includes Rick Porcello and Brad Penny instead of an additional reliever.

CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia are the only starting pitchers on the 25-man roster announced Friday. That means Sabathia would start a fourth game, if it's needed, on three days' rest Tuesday.

Phil Hughes and A.J. Burnett, starters during the regular season, will be in the bullpen. Boone Logan is the only lefty out of eight relievers on the Yankees' roster.

One notable omission: Yankees starter Bartolo Colon. Hector Noesi, Raul Valdes and catcher Austin Romine were also not picked.

Rookie backstop Jesus Montero will back up Russell Martin. Jorge Posada is expected to DH and serve as an emergency catcher.

The Tigers have catcher Omir Santos on the roster to back up Alex Avila and Victor Martinez.
