NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Tell us how you really feel, Torts.

Sean Avery has lost out on the Rangers’ final roster spot — and New York’s coach wasn’t about to mince words Tuesday.

“I think we have better players than Sean Avery — plain and simple,” John Tortorella said. “I can dodge it 10 different ways without trying to run Sean over. I thought he had a good camp.”

The noted agitator was placed on waivers after being beaten out by fellow forward Erik Christensen. Avery could end up on another NHL team if claimed Wednesday, on the Rangers’ AHL affiliate in Connecticut, or loaned to a team in Europe.

Avery was a healthy scratch for New York’s final exhibition games in Slovakia and Switzerland. The Rangers open the regular season this week with games in Sweden.

“I think with the makeup of our team, and some of the people we’ve added, and some of the youth we’ve added as far as depth put Sean in this spot,” Tortorella said.

Avery is entering the final year of his contract, which carries a $1.93 million cap hit for the Rangers. New York and Dallas split payments on Avery’s $4 million salary.

If Avery goes unclaimed, the Rangers could send him to the AHL and have his salary come off their cap.

Do you agree with Tortorella’s assessment of Avery? Let us know in the comments below…

Hey Torts, you have no room for Avery but you hold on to this midget Zuccarello who was invisible the last 3 months of the season because he was worn out. I have nothing against small players. Pat Verbeek, Ray Ferraro and Theo Fleury were fearless. This guy throws a decent pass every 6 games and Torts goes on about how great he is. Bad move.

Thats just Torts style. he always loved the small fast offensive players and pays the bare minimum of attention to the gritty side of the game. I hoped after last season he’d have a more appreciated view of that role since the entire season was played in a blue collar style but he appears as stubborn as ever. Fact is, whatever u think of Avery, the Rangers win when he’s wearing a jersey.

Listen !!!!! Torts never wanted the “THE GREAT AGITATOR” . I predict it will come back to haunt them. Good luck Sean wherever you end up

  • Kazoo

Avery will end up on the Islanders they need him. Tortorella never liked him, and when he embarrassed himself, the club and the league with the whole homophobic slur garbage this training camp, he wrote his ticket off the team.

Kazoo, you literally couldn’t be more wrong. How did Avery run himself out of town? The homophobic slur was directed at AVERY.

So get your head out of your ass and your facts straight.

Hockey wise, it was a numbers game. It was Erik Christensen and Sean Avery for the last foward spot. They were virtually equal, but EC is a good shoot out option and hence he got the spot.
