Bloomberg: Wall Street Protests Trying To ‘Get Rid’ Of Jobs, Hurting Tourism

Zuccotti Park Not Cleaned In 3 Weeks; Local Businesses Getting Annoyed

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — On the 20th day of the “Occupy Wall Street” protest, Mayor Michael Bloomberg weighed in on the movement. He mostly criticized the group and said their actions are hurting the economy and tourism sector.

On his weekly radio show Friday, Bloomberg said long-term chaos and a prolonged money drain are bad for the city. He said he is sympathetic to some protestor complaints, but certainly not all.

“What they’re trying to do is to take the jobs away from people working in the city. They’re trying to take away the tax base we have because none of this is good for tourism,” he said. “There’s no easy solutions here.”

The mayor continued his criticism saying “if the jobs they are trying to get rid of in this city, the people that work in finance — which is a big part of our economy — go away, we’re not going to have any money to pay our municipal employees or clean the parks or anything else.”

However, he showed no inclination to put a stop to what has been going on.

“From a practical point of view, I think we want to let some of this not ‘play out’ isn’t quite the right word, but let them express themselves,” Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg Says There Aren’t Any Easy Solutions. 1010 WINS’ Stan Brooks Reports.

When asked if he would allow the demonstrators to stay, the mayor replied “we’ll see what happens, we’ve got to focus on making things better.”

The cramped and noisy protesters in Zuccotti Park does not appear to be going anywhere soon. To date, the occupation has cost the city an extra $2 million in police overtime alone.

The owners of the private park, Brookfield Office Properties, cannot simply eject the demonstrators because the charter for the park allows 24-hour public access. But the owners never counted on this and appear to be getting fed up.

In a statement they said “because the protestors refuse to cooperate…the park has not been cleaned since Friday, September 16th and as a result, sanitary conditions have reached unacceptable levels.”

“They’re just making life miserable for the working guy,” bar owner Mike Keane told CBS 2’s Dave Carlin.

However, demonstrators insist they are being good neighbors, making an effort to be quiet in the overnight hours and cleaning up after themselves.

“The people that have been here, have been making sure to clean up. You can walk through and see, but I’ve seen multiple people sweeping,” demonstrator Michelle Rafic said.

Demonstrators have also taken issue with Mayor Bloomberg’s statements that the occupation is detrimental instead of positive.

“I think the more we talk about and get all the issues out there that need to be discussed, need to be confronted, obviously whatever we’re doing right now isn’t working. So until we figure out something that leads to a better America for everybody not just a small percentage of Americans,” Joshua Durham said.

I’ve never wanted or needed to go to New York City before. Never seemed like a very nice place to visit, but I am now considering a trip there soon. It’s good to see something good come out of NY finally. Thank you OWS

It is obvious the ultra-radical, corrupt teachers and transit workers unions are financially backing these “protestors”, which is really adding insult to injury given the horrific state of the public schools, what with the forged test scores, fudged numbers, lowered standards, incompetent quota minority principals and rubber rooms (should be rubber padded rooms).

But never fear they have the Democrats, some Republicans, as well as Obama and Arne Duncan, the “Secretary of Education”, in their pockets. Let’s gid rid of the Department of Education — it is a worthless, useless bureaucracy.

As far as Bloomberg, I wonder why his luxurious townhouse was overlooked by the protestors in their visits to the Upper East Side homes of the rich and powerful. Bloomberg is the mayor and the second richest person in New York. What’s he whining about?

  • Deemerk

Bloomberg is only concerned for his own image; not that of New York City.
He is being shown to be exactly what he is: an effete, elitist leftist out of touch with reality. He is owned by Wall Street.

  • Bill

Its like the original Woodstock (and probably the follow up copycats) encapsulating what the “60s” we all about. Check the end of the original movie – it was just a big party. People trashed everything and then went home.
    These protests are social events.

There is an old saying “You zig while they zag.” Those that were really frustrated with their – in some cases – job situation stayed home and took advantage of the sudden lack of applicants and got jobs.

  • ontie1

Trapped and proud of it..Bloomberg is in a hard place because he condones the government unions and allows them to corrupt the vote of the taxpayer. Ihe confronts them on this protestor issue they cause the workings of NYC to stop by their own ties to the unions supporting the protestors.

Wise up you political pukes and decertify the government unions, they are not legal and they are a corrupting influence on the tax payer and voters….

  • MarkN

NYC needs a good rain to wash away the filth.

I remember when the Tea Party was making similar complaints before they were co-opted by the GOP and the Koch Brothers. The protestors are arguing against a financial industry that is based on destructive speculation, gouging and government backing in which profits are privatized and loses are socialized. If people remember what the Tea Party stood for in the early days, it was a rebellion against TARP which was promoted by the GOP and continued by Obama. The biggest tragedy was the lack of convictions of those who ran many of the banks and the fact that banks were (and under current GOP and some Democratic support) were allowed to be to big to fail. Stockholders need to loose everything when a bank fails… that will make things safer in the future. For example, the first Wall Street bailout (under Bush) has been agreed to by conservative and liberal economists as making things worse. Tea Party members should remember what they were against before they were made into a GOP captive organization. Ron Paul still gets it.

  • Maud St. James

All these protesters are just like the fundamental Muslim terrorists – they have no objection to living in dirt, care nothing about anyone else’s desires or accomplishments and are deluded enough to think that they’re doing something right. Idiocy.

Just because they’re incapable of succeeding or living a normal life, they want to pull everyone who has down to their level.

  • Jack

Joseph Lenin called these flea baggers “useful idiots”. The majority of these 20 somethings sit around playing bucket drums, or playing hacky sack all awhile, 99% of them could not formulate a coherent sentence as to the reason for their protest. Now that union thugs have chimed in, for the purpose of representing the “working class”, the drive-by media has all the legitimacy to call this gang of misfits a legitimate counter to the Tea Party.

  • Russ Felix

It seems to me that the protesters are a hodge podge of idle individuals who enjoy protesting as much as they are concerned about the issues at hand. That being said I agree that corporations in the US have co-opted lawmakers to come up with ways to increase their wealth at the expense of the population of the country. This is the evil that must be contended with. Both Dems and Repubs are co-opted and therefore are not acknowledging the problem. Tea Partyers and occupiers are both able to see the problem with great clarity because the declining income of the population has put great stress on many.

  • Rasputttin

America is dead. This is all by design. What ever greed Wall street has is nothing compared to the immoral idiocy of these protesters. Lets protest the sin of another by displaying the other 6 deadly sins. That’l show’em.

There’s just such a strange disconnect. There are the problems as they’ve been created over time. There are the causes of those problems. There are solutions to those problems. To see what is going on in this country, both politically and socially. I must conclude that the goal of solutions being acted and enacted is to overthrow this country Not fix the problem.

  • freebie

Disgusting dirty dogs, leaving human waste, tying up traffic, acting like pigs, deficating on police cars, I hear you’re getting paid by wacky socialists and unions.

    Get out of my city!!!!

  • jasleck

Give me a high pressure pumper fire truck and I’ll be more that glad to “clean” the park and all surrounding areas of all the vermine and crap, and I’ll do it for FREE!!!!

  • Alice Polarbear

Evil of me, I admit, but if some horrible contagious disease ripped through all that filthy rabble and knocked down their numbers by about 50%, I doubt that I’d feel sad.

My only concern would be keeping the cooties where they’d do the most good and not sicken innocent people.

  • John Politano

If we just ignore the little slackers maybe they will just meander off. These fleabaggers have no coherent message or statement, so just ignore them. I’m sure they will throw a tantrum and then they can be arrested. Make them clean up the mess as punishment.

    • Rasputttin

That only works on people with a life. These idiots have nothing better to do so they wont be going anywhere. Besides, they are getting paid to be there. This is there job. Probably the only job they are qualified for and can be depended on to be there.

  • Pounce Kitty

Liberals and these fake “protesters” are a crime against humanity. They HATE HATE HATE successful people, anyone who works hard for a reward, anyone who creates a company or jobs for others. These buffoons just want free handouts across the board — education, healthcare, house, car, cell phone. They are the scum of the earth.

  • Alan

Have the property changed to Private property and tell protesters they have to leave or be arrested for trespassing. Also think what they are doing is treasonist as they are wanting to collapse America!!!

  • BigBoa

You ASKED for an example. He gave you one. Your reply? How about another?

Muslims FIRST had to be able to GET here to attack. If you were honest about it, you would realize it is THEIR goal to dominate the entire globe under islam. It is NOT a religion. It is a political system that uses religious inferences to force its followers to submit. You idiots might not mind if our nation is overtaken, but those of us who understand their real intentions do not wish to see the nation forced to submit or die by beheading…..

You are right!!! It was rude to ask for an example from within the last 150 years!!!

Are you implying that Muslim couldn’t get to America until 1982?

  • Thomas Warmuth

These parasites oppose everything freedom has given us, including the assumption that toilets will always be available, functional, and free. Let them fester in their own waste for as long as they are protesting. Don’t clean the mess up for them. They deserve it.

  • Cromulent

These are the wages of progressivism.

  • Steve Coss

I see our VP compared these protesters with the Tea Party protests. What planet does he live on. Not once was a Tea Party protester arrested, Not once did a Tea Party member deficate on a police car, Not once was any place that a tea party protest was held came up trashed unlike the mess that these protesters leave behind them. I could go on but I won’t bother as I am baffled as to how anyone could make that kind of comparison.
Another very sad chapter in the history of this great country.

    • John Politano

The anyone you speak of is the Joe Biden, the dumbest human on the planet, don’t be surprised, be sad that he is the VP position.

    • Captain Kirk

      They’re just liars. It’s simple.

  • ConservativeRedneck

Marxism is an revolutionary movement developed by the German scholar and activist Karl Marx and his collaborator Friedrich Engels. Marx’s approach is indicated by the opening line of the Communist Manifesto (1848): “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles”. Marx believed that capitalism, like previous socioeconomic systems, would produce internal tensions which would lead to its destruction. Just as capitalism replaced feudalism, capitalism itself will be displaced by communism, a classless society which would emerge after a transitional period in which the state would be nothing else but the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat. Marxist are said to await “the revolution” with a religious fervor reminiscent of Christians awaiting the Rapture.

    • Captain Kirk

The biggest problem in all of it was the overreliance on computer modeling of risk and the absolute insanity of trying to do so with derivatives spread all around the world, with many times the valuation of the underlying assets. Again, the banks allowed this to happen. The protestors in Manhattan are a bunch of Marxist schmucks for the most part, but let’s not forget who some of the instigators of this crisis were: the federal government of the United States as well as the family bank of Barack Obama’s campaign financier, Penny Pritzker. Everything always comes home to roost, and how can Obama do anything but wink at them?

      • Rasputttin

The one flaw in all that is this line,”All of this was caused by the banks, who basically self-inflicted this wound and brought the Marxists back out of the dustbin of history.”

Banks are not perfect but they are a scapegoat. Marxists were never in the dustbin of history only to be reawakened because something the banks did. The marxist/communist ideology has been working to subvert this country (and all of humanity for that matter) from the very beginning. They don’t take time off from their beliefs. They certainly aren’t going to sit around and wait for some naturally occuring circumstance to happen so they can act. Not just act but complete the act that they have been acting upon for a hundred years. This is the final act. The final act is by design. Wall street, banks, and greed are just tools to give useful idiots a place to point their finger. Anyone who points at the right thing has to be discredited. .

        • Captain Kirk

Duly noted, Mr. Spock. That’s why I keep you around. :)

    • Captain Kirk

All of this was caused by the banks, who basically self-inflicted this wound and brought the Marxists back out of the dustbin of history. It began in Congress with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and also in lending institutions who deliberately lent money to people they knew could never pay it back. The Europeans adopted Basel II and undercapitalized their banks and then bought all of our fake securitized loans. Nobody had any ethics and the banks did this to themselves. The only other thing is that the Europeans thought by this time they’d be paying for their welfare states with American cap and trade climate change money. That hasn’t happened and that’s why they’re in the hole right now: those hundreds of billions of dollars never came through. All of climate change is a wealth transfer mechanism from America to Europe and Europeans in “poor countries” around the world. We didn’t sign on, their social welfare states are bloated beyond belief, and the money that we were supposed to provide to them never arrived. Now they’re going broke and they still want us to pay for it.

In the meantime America thought it could actually build wealth on promises that were broken from the beginning. And that’s just 1/2 of the f***ed up world.

  • Stephen Coss

I have seen several folks , including the VP compare there protesters to the Tea Party. Not once was a Tea Party member arrested, not once did a Tea Party member deficate on a polie car, not once was there any trash left behind during a rally and in fact most places were cleaner after the Tea Party left than when they arrived. Also no one was paid to go to one of the Tea Party protests unlike these protests where some of them have been paid by Unino bosses.

This is a sad day for America

  • Captain Kirk

We need a massive flamethrower aimed from orbit that can fire a scorching wave of directed energy at the whole park, and just burn everyone there to cinders, just like the phasers on Star Trek in a one block area. It would help if Susan Sarandon and Michael Moore were there kissing Nancy Pelosi on a tricycle at the same time, and Tim Robbins got a hockey stick burned right out of his hands. Or we can just set it to “stun” and blap all these arsehats, put them in cabs back to where they came from and make them pay the bill. Please.

The world doesn’t need more hippies. It needs more entrepreneurs and Capitalists. All of these people are parasites: their safety is being secured by the things they’re protesting against. It’s time to kick them out of the park and kick this President and his entire administration into 1968 and out of office.

  • zulu

Why isn’t CBS posting the pictures of these filthy, vile anarchists? Have to go to the UK Mail Online to see what’s really happening. The trash heaps, mess, public defecation is all there. And the left supports and encourages this. In fact, this whole thing is organized by the left. This is not the direction intelligent people want our country going.

College Kids who never worked a day in their life whining about taxes and bailouts? What have they ever contributed to society?

  • code

You know what really irritates me about the protestors? That sea of white faces. How racist they all are. You know, Wall Street existed before there was a black President, haters. Why now? Obviously it’s your hatred of black people and not Wall Street that bothers you. They just hate the black President so they pretend to protest. Obviously.

    • Dennis D

I agree. Its a left wing racist movement that hates the fact that we have a black President.

  • Joe B.

Just dump 300 gallons of LiquidAss in the middle of the protest and I pretty much guarantee that they would want to be anywhere that location. haha

  • MyOhMy

You gotta love the “Refund California..make Banks Pay!” sign.
It couldn’t possibly be the decades of Liberal Government and Union takeover of California that bankrupted that state. It couldn’t be the massive spending and entitlement programs, and free everything for illegal immigrants while those who came here legally get stepped on. No….
The country going down the same path couldn’t possibly be a Dem controlled Senate that hasn’t passed a budget in 900 days, voted down Obama’s ridiculous budget 97-0 but blamed Reps, tables all Rep House job bills….no no no….
It couldn’t be Obama’s massive growth in both Government and regulations that crush companies and push more people out of jobs and into Government dependence…….while doubling our deficit and setting records as the largest growth in Debt ever…..nooo…

  • US Citizen

What this country needs to do is get rid of ALL people here illegally. Then there will be jobs for the CITIZENS of the USA. Many countries do not allow foreigners to work in their country. And ALL big corporations should be required to have their customer service centers in the USA. ALL big corporations should be required to manufacture their products in the USA. When these things happen then ALL citizens of the USA will be able to work and the economy will improve. Call any big US corporation and you speak to customer service reps in every country except USA. These jobs should be for the citizens of the USA. As long as people keep buying foreign and supporting corporations who send their jobs overseas and manufacture their products overseas the problem will continue. Go to a restaurant in any big city in the USA. It’s rare to see a citizen of the USA working there. Always illegal immigrants. There are over one million restaurants in big cities in the USA. If they hire AMERICANS there would be over 4 million AMERICANS working. Our government and big corporations need to start taking care of business at home. Support the CITIZENS of USA and many problems will be solved. Enforce the laws we already have and deport EVERY illegal immigrant immediately.

    • Kevin Pearson

You really think some homie in the hood is going to go to leave the Bronx and go to Alabama to work in a chicken plant? It ain’t going to happen.
I am sorry but your pie-in-the-sky idea is no better than these loonies on Wall Street.
I predicted five years ago, that without the migrant work force, food prices would go up, not because of the increased labor costs, but because of the food shortages that are going to occur because there won’t be any one to harvest the food. My exact prediction is taking place right now in Georgia where crops are being left in the fields to rot because there isn’t enough people to pick them.

Plenty of jobs for CITIZENS of this USA, but there aren’t anyone willing to take them,.

  • RuRu

so, the “Fleabaggers” are dirtying the park. They should fit right in with the illegal immigrants and the Liberal jerks that occupy New York City.
See how many rich people and tourists that will want to be in the City to spend their money now!

    • Kevin Pearson

the Hiphoppers dirty up the entire city in South Beach in one weekend every year on Memorial Day. Why is it news that these protesters dirty up one park? These kids are cleaner than those that attend Urban Beach Week.

  • Disenchanted

Just read the owner of the park in NYC just got a 190 billion dollar ‘loan ‘ from Barry. If this isn’t a conspiracy I don’t know what is. For the president of the United States to stoop this low is utterly disgusting – however not unexpected by someone as sleazy as barry.

    • Kevin Pearson

I don’t think that can be right. Even Greece hasn’t asked for $190 billion in loans.

Bloomberg represents exactly what these people are protesting. A rich person who looks out for himself and his rich friends, i.e. Cathie Black. He cares nothing about the city but about protecting the interests of the corporate elite who hope to run America for the 1% of people who they feel are entitled! They believe that the other 99% are here to provide them with profits and income for their extravagent lifestyles… nothing more.

    • Pounce Kitty

“Corporate elite” is a fake and phony appellation. It’s a buzzword to incite hate against the successful and hard working. 50% of our lazy countrymen are now on some kind of government assistance. I say we need a war on the lazy, the incompetent, the n’er do wells, the liberal users and liberal greedy who just take and take and take and never give back anything. Time for a War on The Lazy Left!

When camp outs got too iobstructive, Berkeley got rid of the trash on Telegraph Road just outside the UC by driving high pressure watering trucks (like those used at constructions sites to keep dust down) up & down every few hours to clean the sidewalks. They used reclaimed water to make sure they were environmentally friendly.

  • Jim Busse

    The protestor’s chant:
