Reporting Emily Smith
MANORVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – The Long Island father whose wife and oldest son were killed in a tragic crash this past week spoke out for the first time on Friday.
Two of his other children were also injured. His daughter now fighting to survive, reports CBS 2’s Emily Smith.
It’s something Jason Trinca called a miracle. He was holding his 2-year-old son, Christopher, for the first time since the little boy was released from critical condition.
Trinca’s wife, 30-year-old Keri, and his 7-year-old son, Jason, died in a car crash about two weeks ago. Investigators tell CBS 2 it’s unclear what caused Keri Trinca to drive her Honda Accord into an oncoming van at an intersection on County Road 111 in Manorville.
Memorials and fundraisers over the past week have helped Jason Trinca raise money for medical bills. Hundreds of friends and family fought tears while remembering little Jason. Some even wore number 48, the boy’s award-winning Go Kart number. It was his favorite past time.
His godmother told Smith that passion for life came directly from his mother.
“I’m going to miss the family functions, the weddings, her pulling me to the dance floor. A lot of pictures that I have of her are of her the dance floor dancing,” Danielle Chavez said.
On Friday, Keri Trinca’s mother wiped away her tears as her son-in-law thanked EMT workers, and anyone else who helped save his little boy, Christopher, and 4-year-old daughter, Marialena.
“Although Chris’ recovery is a miracle we still need as many thoughts and prayers. My daughter … my little fresh … but all I can say is thank you. I still need to get back upstairs to my daughter who needs me,” Jason Trinca said.
Marialena remains at Stony Brook Hospital in serious condition.
The funeral service for Keri and Jason Trinca will be held Monday in Center Moriches.
