There will be a fireworks show, a flotilla of ships up New York harbor, a naturalization ceremony, a cake and much more to celebrate the statue’s 125th anniversary.
“We’ll also have a series of performances and some readings of speakers on the island itself,” said National Park Service spokeswoman Jane Ahern.
Ahern adds the statue is as relevant now as it’s ever been.
“Her significance certainty remained important throughout the years, but her symbolism continued to change as a message of liberty changed throughout our country and the world,” she said.
Starting October 29, the monument will be getting a $27.25 million makeover to make the interior safer and more accessible.
Once completed, the interior of Lady Liberty will have new stairways and elevators as well as upgrades to water, electrical and fire suppression systems.
