Horror In Westchester: Family Of 4 Found Dead In Cross River Home

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. (CBS 2) -- It was a nightmare on a peaceful, ritzy street. A mother, father and their two children were all found dead in their home on Tuesday night.

It was an apparent murder-suicide so grisly investigators are still piecing together what happened, reports CBS 2's Lou Young.

"This is devastating. I mean, in our community like this, this is not something that we're used to at all," Lewisboro Police Chief Frank Secret said.

The police chief was as stunned as everyone else at the horror inside the house on Lambert Ridge Road.

A father, mother and two children were dead in an apparent murder-suicide so bloody and confusing cops were not immediately certain how each victim died or which one of the adults did the killing.

State Troopers were called to check on the home late Tuesday afternoon after the husband didn't show up for work earlier in the day.

"The initial trooper who arrived at the scene got into the residence, discovered two of the four bodies, retreated from the residence. At that point a more a further examination of the residence where the two other subjects were located," said Capt. Michael Kopy.

The dead are identified as Sam Friedlander and his wife, Amy, and their two children, a girl aged 11, and a boy, 8.

The house is for sale. One neighbor told Young a divorce was underway but that there was no hint of anything that could have led to this.

"We've mobilized whatever resources we can with the school and attempt to get grief counselors out. I would ask any of the people of the town to basically just hug your kids and give them any support you can. We're a very close community and this has an aura of unreality to us," Lewisboro councilman Frank Kelly said.

Police went door-to-door in the neighborhood to inform residents of the tragedy. Some were said to be inconsolable, Young reports.
