Police Looking For LES Rape Suspect Who Attacked Woman In Broad Daylight

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are trying to find a suspect who is wanted for raping a woman in broad daylight on the Lower East Side.

It happened Sunday, Oct. 9 around 7 a.m. and was captured on surveillance video.

The video shows the woman walking along Attorney Street pulling a suitcase. You can see the suspect come up behind her.

For some reason, he stops and puts his hat on the hood of a nearby car.

Police say he then continues after her, raping her in the middle of the sidewalk.

Police say the suspect then took off after the victim fought back, but first he stops to get his hat.

Many woman in the neighborhood say what's so scary about the attack is that the victim was just walking down the street on a Sunday morning.

"You wouldn't think it would happen," said Lower East Side resident Adie Koby. "I wouldn't."

This attack is just another in a long list of sexual assaults that have happened around the city.

In just the past few months, at least two dozen women have been sexually assaulted in Brooklyn and Queens.

At least 20 incidents have been reported in South Brooklyn, and police have recently arrested two men suspected of attacks there.

On Monday, police arrested a suspect in connection with an attack in Sunset Park back in May.
