NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police say remains that were found in a crawl space of a Staten Island home last month are believed to be human and the case is now being classified as a homicide.

The skeleton was found in the basement of the home on Sept. 1 after Tropical Storm Irene.

Police say the homeowner was pumping water out of the basement when he found the remains.

The medical examiner deemed the death a homicide on Tuesday.
