3 Arrests Made In Shooting Death Of Brownsville Mother Of 13

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police have made three arrests in connection with a rooftop shooting that left a mother of 13 dead and a young girl injured in Brooklyn.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Andrew Lopez, 18, confessed to the shooting death of Zurana Horton last Friday.

“We’re certainly pleased with the fact that the investigation has identified Mr. Lopez and he’s made statements and apparently made a full confession,” Kelly said.

“It is a great relief that someone has been caught for the crime that has been committed,” the victim’s stepfather, Kenneth Thompson, told CBS 2’s Derricke Dennis. “There can never be closure. I have 12 grandchildren right now who will never have the comfort of their mother tucking them to sleep every night.”

Kelly said Lopez opened fire from a rooftop sending bullets into a crowd of parents and students in a “retaliation” shooting in Brownsville last week stemming from a gang-related dispute involving his brother.

“He’s made statements that he fired his weapon from the rooftop and resulted in the death of the woman who was protecting those three young children in front of the supermarket,” Kelly said.

1010 WINS’ Eileen Lehpamer reports police tracked down Lopez based on a tip.

A second suspect Jonathan Carrasquillo, 22, was charged with murder, two counts of felony assault, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment in connection with the shooting. A third suspect, Kristian Lopez, 17, has also been charged with criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.

The Horton family paused to look at the makeshift memorial outside of the Bushwick building where their beloved relative grew up.

Horton’s sister, Asia, told Lehpamer that Zarana will finally be able to rest in peace following the arrests.

“All of us will be in peace, this is what we’ve been waiting for,” she said.

Asia Horton also noted that her sister has given birth to 13 children and that one of her daughters died of pneumonia at the age of 9.

Religious leaders in Brooklyn were among the many at the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville waiting for hours to see three suspects under arrest.

“I think the community has a conscious awareness now that, guess what, they’re tired of it too.  They want to see peace in their own community,” Bishop Gerald Seabrooks told CBS 2’s Derricke Dennis.

Police said  Horton, who was killed, was not the intended target of the shooting.

Shots rang out around 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the intersection of Pitkin Avenue and Watkins Street near P.S. 298 where students had just been dismissed 13 minutes earlier.

Horton died instantly when bullets hit her in the face and chest. She is being regarded as a hero after police said she was seen hovering over a group of children to protect them as the shots were fired.

Sixth-grader Cheanne McKnight, 11, sustained a graze wound to the cheek.  McKnight told CBS 2 on Monday that “before I got to run the bullet had hit me in my face.”

A 31-year-old mother was also shot in the arm and chest.

Police discovered seven shell casings on a rooftop about one block away — 1800 Pitkin Ave. Five other shell casings were found in front of that building and authorities believe they came from a gunman’s 9mm semiautomatic pistol.

Most of Horton’s 12 children, ranging in age from one to 18, will be raised by their grandparents.

There is still no word if anyone has claimed the $12,000 reward that was being offered for information in the deadly shooting.

Well said april..truth be told some people really overlook the woman who had fifty abortions n look down on a woman with 13 kids..but in the long run father god will be the judge n is the only one..she didnt committ any crime by having children….she was a victim

  2. Kathren says:

Apples and oranges! Her death is a tragedy and in that context has nothing to do with her choices or her lifestyle. The anger at this young woman has more to do with the anger at this country and the financial mess we are in. Just because you want welfare reform shouldn’t harden your heart to the point you are not affected about the death of another human being.

  3. nypj says:

should be cheaper to put this one kid in jail then to support any more children this one would constantly be popping out… seriously 13 kids? seems kind of impossible for anyone to have a job if they are too busy getting pregnant that often…

  4. Rufus Jenkins says:

may she rest in peace…but 13 kids?!?!?!
whitey better get busy or dis be turn a black planet, yo!.

    1. Susan says:

You comment was so dumb. A black planet? I never know I was living in a white planet. Grow up & wake up.

  5. linking90 says:

why u think white is not a color ??

    1. LW says:

White is the absence of color. She probably thinks that because she’s educated.

      1. linking90 says:

LW: Probably you have never been to school. However, if you are educated you should know the answer : what are the colors of the American flag ? .

      2. Count Yob says:

White is the presence of all colors. Run it through a prism and you get a rainbow.

    2. LW says:

Why do you think lack of grammar and substituting letters for words is English?

      1. linking90 says:

LW: Its my wish.. Don’t like it, too bad for u !

    3. Johnny Handsome says:

White isn’t a color. As stated, its the absence of color as black is all color combined.

  6. Jonathan Steinberg says:

I heard that the NYPD sold them the guns.

  7. Truth-be-told says:

Al Sharpton has condemned the shooting and has visited the grieving family. Take your racist rant some where else if you don’t have anything good to say.

  8. Dia says:

  12. Walt says:

It’s easy to pick up a gun than pick up a book, i wonder if this was planned when they woke up and brushed they’re teeth, put on some clothes, ate a bowl of cereal, that they would be a murderer, in the words of Marvin Gaye- What’s goin on?

    1. RushL says:

all 3 punks should be charged with murder. it should be a joint venture felony. early warning note to the aclu – just sit down & shut up. don’t try the nonsense that a confessiion was coerced. an innocent, brave woman was murdered , an 11 year old was wounded, many others put in harms way on what should have been a quiet, friday afternoon. the good people of ny will be saddled with footing the bill for 3 selfish felons whose families will try to get sympathy by saying they were “good boys.” welll, we’re not buying it. put the 3 of them in a circular cell, no more than 6 feet in diameter, windowless, with minimal electricity and a slot for 1 meal a day. no tv, phone, computer, education. they’ve denied rights to other people. regrettably we can’t rid ourselves of vermin like these 3. the vikings, and native peoples had an answer for wrongdoers. justice for the real victims, not punks.

When will someone other than myself realize that m o n k e y s and guns just don’t mix?

      1. Street Talk says:

What really doesn’t mix is ASSES and REPLIES. Some people are just so proud to be racist but too scared to be anything more than Joe Schmo.

    1. Johnny Handsome says:

Really, ace11 – that’s whats wrong with this country? Kids? Really? Not the greed that drives the country? Not the wholesale killing of millions?

  15. Peter says:

May the mother of twelve rest in peace.

  17. JoeZ says:

I guess the only requirement in order to join a gang, is to be extremely stupid and own a gun. But this doesn’t concern the city administration under Bloomberg. Don’t worry Mikey, I”m not using too much salt and I don’t smoke in a public place, so I’m not breaking your most important laws.

    1. Peter says:

      good point!!

    2. Idratherbegolfing says:

Your right; its Bloomberg’s fault that this a-hole went on top of a roof and started shooting. I got a great idea. How about Al Sharpton holds a rally in Brownsville condemning this violence and really rolls his sleeves up and works with the community to try and solve the problems that are way to prevalent there. If this was a police officer who shot somebody he would be all over the news screaming about injustice. Don’t blame Bloomberg. Blame the lack of leadership and positive role models in these neighborhoods.

  18. Joe Schmo says:

She could have been Mr. Lopez’ mother. Oh wait…..she probably was.

  19. April says:

At this point its a non factor as to how many children she had. The fact remains that this mother did a selfless act to save someone else’s child. Truth be told at least she took responsibility for her actions. The same ones making comments about the number of children she had are most likely the same ones who use abortion as a means of birth control. Just because your “proof” isnt walking around calling you mommy/daddy doesn’t make you holier than thou! May her family find peace and comfort during this time of bereavement. ::nobody understands until it hits home::

  20. A. king says:

Raed carefully before you past judgement. The mother was 34 years old.

  21. Very conservative says:

    Liberalism is a mental disorder.

    1. Johnny Handsome says:

Very insightful response to this article. No wonder the country is in the shape it s it.

  22. Doc says:

The ones who claimed she was on welfare you really must only have one serving of stupid flakes and do a little research and reading . She was attending NYU night classes and was working in a law firm as a clerk . So before you spout off just because she was black and had 12 kids ease off on you stupidity

    1. CeeCee says:

She can not support 12 kids on a clerk’s salary especially while attending NYU night school. She had to be getting financial support somewhere. Seriously, how large, which means expensive of an apartment does one need to house 12 kids. In NYC, that’s expensive real estate. Sure aint paying for it on her salary.

    2. Boomer says:

Yeah sure… this hoodrat was on her back most of her life (or on all fours ;)- what makes you think she was trying to do the right thing by actually working and going to school? And how could a clerk’s salary pay for her kids’ food/ clothing AND tuition to NYU night classes???

  23. Eugenia Renskoff says:

Hi,. The woman gave her life so that kids would not get hurt. The fact that she was 31 and had 12 kids makes her more of a heroine. She knew that if she died, her unborn kid would die as well. The City should do something for her kids. Eugenia Renskoff

    1. SG says:

Why should the city do anything for her kids ? The fact that she was 31 and had 12 kids shows that she had no control over when her cloths were downed !

      1. boomer says:

“…she had no control over when her cloths were downed !”.

        Is this English?

    2. LW says:

The city has probably been supporting her kids. 12 kids and no mention of baby daddy (daddies?)

  24. H says:

I wonder if the gun which Mr Andrew Lopez used to murder this young women happen to come from these scumbags in custody. “Brooklyns Finest”. They should get everything they have coming to them. We need the ATF full time in NYC.

  25. Nicole says:

It is so sad to know that a good woman lost her life to a calus act of violence. What is going on with these young people? We need to come together as a community and make these young people realize that when they commit an act of stupidity that they forever scar others who don’t desrve to be punished. My heart pours out to the family and all her children. May God shine down on you always and grant you with his peace.

    1. rricky says:

nicole you couldnt said it any better. thats what i was going to say .amen

  26. patrick says:

What does the fact that this woman had 12 kids have to do with the fact that she was murdered by a stray bullet. isnt the bigger issue the fact that some animal felt the need to shoot up a block filled with innocent people picking up their kids from school? So if she had only two kids would that have made a difference in saving her life?

  27. Brit says:

12 children… ranging from one to 18. She was 31 years old. So she was 13 years old when she had her first child… SMH! Ladies keep your legs closed… and locked! For a fact she was on welfare! She couldn’t have afforded 12 children on her own!

    1. Nina says:

WOW!!!!!!! You are the weakest link! What does welfare have to do with this woman being murdered by trying to protect OTHER PEOPLES CHILDREN? It is a pleasure to see how low your point of view is. Please do not comment on nothing else, you FOOL!!!!!

      1. SG says:

You obviously are being that “FOOL”!
As much as I sympathize with her family and condemn this senseless violence, given the state of budgets of most states and the federal government being in deep deep debt, a woman woi isn’t a millionaire ,has 12 kids and is pregnant with the 13th sure as hell raises questions…who is paying for the kids (after all, she isn’t a millionaire) and who gets to raise the kids(obviously , the grand parents aren’t millionaires either)..why should the tax payer pay for her inability to keep her legs crossed and locked…all PERTINENT QUESTIONS . You obviously are the broken link !

  28. Liberals Are Evil says:

GOOD GRIEF!!! 12 kids…no wonder NYS is running out of money…too many welfare cases.

    1. Marco A says:

That’s what you get out of the story? Great to have you on this planet.

      1. Liberals Are Evil says:

You and that other idiot Nina are obviously welfare cases. You don’t see the whole picture…that woman was only 31 years old…she had no intention of having herself fixed not to have any more kids. No one deserves to die that way but for heaven’s sake use birth control and get out of that ghetto. Yes it great to have me on this planet…I cannot say the same for you or that other moron.

        1. Marco A says:

Great insight. Now, everyone is on welfare. Too bad I can’t afford the widescreen image you view in order to fully understand how this world works. Thanks for your original thoughts.
