NYC Taxi Drivers Could Be Fined For Honking Horns

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It may get a lot quieter on the streets of New York City now that cabbies have been told they could get fined for honking their horns.

WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond reports: TLC Wants To Cut Down On Honking

Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky says cab drivers now run the risk of being fined $350 if they toot their horn.

“We’re just asking drivers be a good neighbor,” said Yassky. “The horn is there for emergencies, it’s not there to vent your frustration.”

But not all drivers are heeding the warning.

“In New York City, you have to honk,” said one cab driver. “There are plenty of people on the street, crossing the street on their cell phone and you have to honk to wake them up.”

1010 WINS’ John Montone reports: Cab Drivers React To New Rule

“They don’t move when they should be moving, so I honk,” said another driver.

The TLC is urging passengers to let cabbies know when they’re being obnoxious and if they don’t listen, Yassky says the passenger should report them to 311.

The TLC is a huge crock or bull. There’s way too many taxi’s in nyc, and they are not needed!!!!!

This is total insane $350 fine. Perhaps Mr. Billion-berg think that he can meet america’s budjet deficit by issuing more and more summons to common people in every shape and form (taxes, tunnel hikes, mta hikes, fees increases in general.. and what not…. Question is for how long he can do this before people knocks on his door ?

what is done about 7 million mooslime terrorists living in usa?

  5. Ethan F. says:

Good they should. And people should get fines for blocking the sidewalk with their fat butts.

    1. Christopher T. says:

Here is an article that talk about fines for fat people…

  6. mak says:

Maybe the cab drivers could get a good set of amplified drums. Zuccotti Park has illustrated that the city has tolerance for beating drums.

  7. John says:

stupid. what happened to banning all non-commercial traffic down from 42st….then there will be no HONKING.

  8. sezar says:

NYC birth defect ratio from pollution is high because every goddamn self-important hotshot with a car feels like driving downtown – public transport not good for her/him.. ban that – many problems solved.

  9. John says:

stupid law. what happened to banning all “OTHER” non-commercial traffic down from 42st….then there will be no HONKING.

  10. A Pedestrian says:

A $350 ticket is ridiculous. No police person wants to give that. So they give about 7 honking tickets per year in all of NYC (actual number). The ticket price should be $25 and given 20,000 times per year.

  11. J Edward Lyons says:

i have heard cabs hit the horn soon as the light changes without even giving the cars a chance to move and its not a toot but a 30 second horn blast. I have seen them run redlights , almost been hit in the cross walk with the crossign light for me white as a cab is turning with out waiting for the people crossing the street to move. Seen cabs make left turns from the right lane and nothing happens. what needs to be doen is a few under cover on the streets and ticket these guys once the word spreads then it will stop. Also the speeding cabs need soem tickest too. city traffic is 30 mph not 50.

    1. Sezar says:

Ive been living in the city for 8 years now and only hit in the city twice – once on my bike. Never by a taxi. I almost got hit by an important business guy and he kept honking while driving away.. crazy city.

    2. Aadil says:

you only saying this because you dont take cabs .. lazy people have no place in NYC .

  12. breandan says:

Uh, Taxi drivers are not city workers. They’re independent contractors who are regulated by the city government (and state).

  13. breandan says:

This law will rarely be enforced. There are laws against trucks using horns that can be heard for blocks but it’s a daily occurance. I have never seen a tractor-trailer being stopped for blasting its air-horn even right in front of the cops. Cabs blow through intersections while traffic cops stand there directing them to stop so they don’t “block the box”.
With all the cops earning overtime in Zuccotti Park how are they going to issue fines/

  14. Richee Gordon says:

What about the losers in the park?
Banging on drums all day and into the night that’s okay?
Let’s pick on cab drivers they don’t have free lawyers.

  15. Wajid Q says:

If their putting such tough sanctions on the Taxi Drivers, They should Atleast Give them BENEFITS , like the state does to ALL CITY WORKERS!!!

    1. Michael H. says:

Taxi drivers are not state or city employees. Why should they get state or city benefits?
