NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It may get a lot quieter on the streets of New York City now that cabbies have been told they could get fined for honking their horns.

Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky says cab drivers now run the risk of being fined $350 if they toot their horn.

“We’re just asking drivers be a good neighbor,” said Yassky. “The horn is there for emergencies, it’s not there to vent your frustration.”

But not all drivers are heeding the warning.

“In New York City, you have to honk,” said one cab driver. “There are plenty of people on the street, crossing the street on their cell phone and you have to honk to wake them up.”

“They don’t move when they should be moving, so I honk,” said another driver.

The TLC is urging passengers to let cabbies know when they’re being obnoxious and if they don’t listen, Yassky says the passenger should report them to 311.
