‘Bernard And I Attempted Suicide,’ Ruth Madoff Tells ’60 Minutes’

Author Of Book On Disgraced Financier Not Buying What She's Selling

(CBS News/CBSNewYork)Ruth Madoff makes some startling admissions in a “60 Minutes” interview airing this Sunday.

In the only interview Madoff has given regarding her husband’s crimes, Ruth told Morley Safer she and Bernard were so distraught over the burden of his multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme, that they attempted suicide together.

“I don’t know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening,” Madoff told Safer. “We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said ‘…I just can’t go on anymore.'”

In an excerpt from the interview that aired Wednesday night on the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley,” Ruth said she and Bernard took a bunch of pills, some of them Ambien and possibly some Klonopin. She did not drink alcohol with them for fear of vomiting.

“I took what we had, he took more,” said Ruth. “It was Christmas Eve, that added to the whole depression.”

But the pills didn’t work.

“We took pills and woke up the next day….It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up,” she said.

LISTEN: 1010 WINS’ John Montone reports

Andrew Kirtzman, a former political reporter for CBS 2 and the author of the bestseller “The Life and Lies of Bernie Madoff,” told CBS 2’s Lou Young on Wednesday night he thinks he knows why Ruth Madoff is suddenly breaking her silence.

“Ruth is asking people just to take her word for it because there’s no evidence they tried to kill themselves and this is the first time that anyone has even suggested it,” Kirtzman said.

Bernie Madoff, himself, reportedly told New York Magazine earlier this year that he never considered suicide. But Ruth said that’s why they mailed envelopes full of expensive jewelry to members of their family.

“The feds felt that was just a bald attempt to get rid of the last vestiges of what they had made illicitly and was just going to their cronies and to their family members,” Kirtzman said.

A recipient of one of the Madoff goodie bags recalled the conversation he had with his mother about the strange delivery three years after the fact.

“She told me that she and my father planned to kill themselves and sent me that package before hand,” Andrew Madoff said.

“It seems like she’s stabilized her life and now she’s going on a PR offensive to convince the public that she’s not a devil,” Kirtzman said.

Bernie is just like a modern day Robin Hood. He takes from the rich and give to the poor—his family.

  2. Livin'LargeRules says:

She’s still livin’ large–$2.5 million in the bank’s not bad. Donald Trump (yesterday) said: “They’re FOS.”

  3. prg says:

I watched it and she is lying through her teeth. Morley was way too easy with her. The whole low down bunch of theives knew what was going on.

  4. Noirrts says:

Shame on 60 minutes to bring criminal madoff and his family back in the media at this time. People are suffering. Very tasteless.

  5. Ellen says:

Hey, if the suicide attempt didn’t work out then why not ask for help. I myself would love to wrap a robe around your neck.

  6. Cagrl says:

I saw the interview with the daughter in law and I think there was no evidence, nor did she or her hubby give any indication theu knew what was going on. You can tell a lot in an interview, and I believe the daughter in law 100%. So sad she & her hubby got so much ridicule right off the bat.

  7. Disgusted says:

I think she’s full of it and just trying to gain sympathy since she is hated by 99.9% of the public. Bernie wasn’t in this alone and Ruth, didn’t you handle the book keeping? You should be sitting in prison with your husband, not granting interviews to 60 minutes…

  8. None Of Your Business says:

Pity they didn’t succeed. Would have saved the taxpayers an awful lot of money not having to provide ol’ Bernie the Crook with plush accommodations at the Federal Country Club and having to listen to Wifey whine about the burdens of being caught whilst up to illegal shenanigans. Perhaps they’d like to try again?

  9. Scott says:

I don’t believe they tried to kill themselves. She is as much of a liar as Bernie. They are both Sociopath’s and that is what Sociopath’s do….. They lie and use others. That is all they do. This story is just more proof.

  10. DD says:

Did she try and commit suicide when all of those families, towns, and business’s were destroyed!? Did she try and commit suicide when the money was rolling in? She should be in a prison cell – right next to her husband.
Don’t look to me, nor most of the world for sympathy!

    1. Huh says:

She needs to be next to her dead son….six feet under…

  11. man from old school says:

how come no one heard the gun go off and lady you still live in a 15 million dollar house and 40million in the floor boards and hiddin gold coins you are crying all the way to the bank bs
