Daniel The Beagle, Rescued From Alabama Gas Chamber, Finds New Life In New Jersey

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – It’s a given that cats have nine lives. Beagles, apparently, only live twice.

On Oct. 3, Daniel was put into a gas chamber in Florence, Alabama along with 17 other stray dogs. Carbon monoxide was pumped into the chamber. When officials returned later and opened the door, Daniel walked out.

“He walked out wagging his tail,” Linda Schiller, president of Eleventh Hour Rescue told CBS 2’s Elise Finch. “He was sick but he was alive.”

Daniel, dubbed a “miracle dog,” weighs about 20 pounds.

Following his brush with death, Daniel — aptly named after the biblical character who escaped the lion’s den unharmed — is set for a new life in New Jersey, courtesy of Eleventh Hour Rescue. The group is dedicated to saving pooches from death row in high-kill shelters.

“While we are thrilled that we are able to help him and give him a second chance at life,” wrote Schiller, “we are terribly saddened to think about the other dogs that did not make it out of the chamber alive that day.”

“He’s a sweetheart of a dog,” said Jill Pavlik, who is temporarily Daniel’s foster mother. “He’s very sweet, he’s very personable and friendly. He gets along well with my dog and he walked in here like he’s always been here.”

“He plays like crazy, he’s the happiest little dog,” said Pavlik.

While Daniel’s story is amazing, it’s not the first time a dog has actually survived the gas chamber.

Dr. Elizabeth Boggier, Mountainview Veterinary Hospital, says, “Gasses have different weights and perhaps this pet found an air pocket that was able to keep him comfortable and alive until they were able to open up the door.”

This BARBARIC practice needs to STOP. Sign the petitions, write your congressmen, protest. ADOPT… Spay/neuter.

  3. Angela Kaul says:

BAN this HORRIFIC killing practice. Unfortunately many animals cannot survive because WE refuse to be responsible humans. But THIS is NOT the way to humanely do it. This IS BARBARIC. 😦 😦 😦

Why are we still using gas chambers? This is a cruel and evil way to put our animals down. Its $2 cheaper per animal to inject them, so they sleep. Instead of piling on top of one another and pumping gas in a chamber, till they pretty much explode! They cry, gasping for air, they bite one another to try and free themselves, it takes about 45min for bigger animlas to die, and 30min for the smaller ones to die. IHelp us BAN Gas chambers for good please

  5. Holly Smith says:

31 states use animal gas chambers at the expense of the tax payer. It’s America’s dirty secret! Thousands of beautiful inoccent, adoptable animals are mass murdered in the gas chambers every day across this Great Country. True, some lucky animals survive, but I believe with someome with enough guts and time will see the truth in wgat we cry out for our animals rights. We need change here! STOP THE GASSING! Use our taxes instead for s/n programs, upgrading shelters, shelter reforms, animal adoption seminars, transportation across country, medications, these animals do not have to die! There are solvable solutions to every problem! Gas chambers certainly isn’t it! If it’s too harsh for hard core criminals, why in sams name are we allowing the government to use it on our innocent animals?? Please make this issue known! Thank you.

  6. Georgette Madak says:

The general public has no clue about the brutality toward animals that exists in this nation. People actually believe that there are lots of homes out there for their discarded pets. There are NOT. People continue to exhibit irreverence toward life, expecting someone else to care for the animals they leave behind.

  7. Holly says:

Animal Gas Chambers are in usagage in 31 states across USA. Many states have several counties, compared to states who have 5 chambers. All in all, each one mass murders our inoccent, adoptable, shelter animals. Our taxes pay for such practices, I would much rather see adoption seminars, s/n programs, shelter reform, medications, ALL Gas Chambers Must Go…have any doubts? You Tube has real life gassing videos! Visit our web site for updates. Please allow the USA to know the truth of animal gas chambers. Thanks.

  8. Shanon Armfield says:

I would like to believe that this practice is only allowed to continue because the general public is unaware of how often it occurs and how barbaric and cruel it is. Animal advocates must speak out and keep speaking out to make sure everyone knows not only about the gas chamber, but also the rate that shelters are killing healthy, friendly companion animals in this country. The vast majority of animals being killed in shelters every day are not sick or inappropriate for placement — they die simply because they are homeless. The killing must stop.

  9. Sarah McDonald says:

The fact that in America, homeless dogs are killed every day in shelters across the country is shameful enough, but when the method used is a gas chamber or heart stick without anesthetic, as it is in many facilities in the U.S. we can no longer call ourselves a great country. The American people must stop looking the other way and demand laws that protect companion animals!

  10. debbie says:

i live in a so called third world country in africa. Our shelters do not gas animals. This practice is horrific. People forget so quickly how animals namely dogs played a huge part in 911 search and rescue.

  11. J G says:

CBS ~ please do an in depth story on the cruelty and horrors of these gas chambers! Daniel is one dog that survived that day….thousands were gassed in this country last week, and will be again next week. It is outrageous that this practice is condoned.

  12. Beatrix Kiddo says:

Folks, if the idea of the gas chamber seems wrong to you – that’s because IT IS! Defenders of this practice will say the pets just “go to sleep,” but that is not true. It’s a horrific, lengthy and terrifying death. Daniel is only lucky because the animal control officers did not put him right back in to endure the process a second or third time (yes, that does happen).

Please join the fight to end this barbaric practice – if you doubt the facts, we ENCOURAGE you to research this on your own – you will be amazed to learn the abuses that go on in our animal control facilities.

Here is our White House petition. It’s up until Monday, then it closes down. Please register and sign for the pets. The do so much for us. They at least deserve a respectful, quick and painless death:

  13. Heidi Bulters says:

To make it easier to understand how barbaric gassing is I quote the words of a former control officer who witnessed killings in one of your many gas chambers:

I can say that being killed in gas chamber is terrifying for the animals and heartbreaking for some of us. It is extremely inhuman to cats and dogs. Gassing animals is a horrific experience and something I will never be a party to again. The cries coming from the dying animals are horrendous. It is the ultimate nightmare and no horror film could even come close to depicting the experience.
    ¨
I think it says all. For God’s sake STOP THIS CRUELTY. These animals have done nothing wrong, they were just born in a wrong country! from Netherlands

  14. Barbara says:

It seems that gassing is an easy way for shelter officials to do this unpleasant deed without having to face the reality of the fact with each animal. On the other hand, the dogs are submitted to a potentially horrible death. There has to be another, more humane way. Let’s get more spay and neuter clinics going so this doesn’t have to happen.

  15. Laura says:

Why do they not comment on the obscene conditions of gas chamber practice or how the terrified animals are packed in the chamber like sardines (which is how the air pockets occur)? Why is this allowed? Spay/neuter your pets!

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Gandhi

    1. kim says:

Exactly Laura! I’m thrilled that Daniel survived and has a new home – he is a miracle…however, lets look at the real problem here – GAS CHAMBERS! Are you kidding me? They must be banned. This is a barbaric, horrible death for these homeless dogs – we need to spread the word about these horrible chambers on television and get them banned immediately. And save more homeless dogs by introducing them on TV – so they can be saved!

  16. Barbara Murphy says:

May God Bless this dog and all of the others who are in similar situations, but will not survive. We need to ban this barbaric form of euthanization. We also need to educate the public to NOT SHOP——-ADOPT!!!! And to also spay or neuter your pets. May this story warm everyone’s hearts, may Daniel live a long, happy life and may every shelter pet out there find their FURever family!!!!

  17. Paul Gulya says:

Ifyou are on Facebook, please search TAKE ACTION-Help Ban Animal Gas Chambers and follow the link to sign the online petition to outlaw this horrible and barbaric form of euthanasia.

Adopt, Neuter, Train! Please volunteer to foster an adoptable pet until a forever home can be find. Vote to outlaw Kill Shelters!

  18. Marion Van der Kuij says:

this barbaric method of killing HAS to stop..it is inhumane and a very painful death..People need to spay/neuter their animals..so the petpopulation is slowing down..People also need to understand that owning an animal is a HUGE responsibility..If you cannot afford a pet, DO NOT GET ONE..dogs and cats, rabbits, pocket pets are NOT disposable..PLEASE HELP US TO STOP THIS GASSING OF ANIMALS.
So glad that Daniel is safe..but what about the animals that are being killed by this method on a daily basis..moms and her babies, no matter what age..feral cats, sick cats and dogs..the fear these animals have..the screaming, the pawing to get out, the fighting in the gaschamber..it is HORRIFIC..

  19. Tracey says:

I am so happy Daniel survived and found a forever home. But I am very disappointed that there isn’t more of an outrage that this type of euthanasia is still being used. It is not the peaceful, humane death we are led to believe. It is inhumane, cruel, barbaric, and unacceptable. Maybe CBS should do a segment on gas chambers so that folks can get these things out of their shelters!

    1. Lynn Humphrey says:

Yes, CBS: won’t you please investigate & report on Dr. Ray Houser, the North Carolina veterinarian (!) who deigns, demonstrates (with NC taxpayers money at public shelters), and sells (for his personal profit) these barbaric killing boxes. Let people know what states are still spending THEIR tax dollars to use this cruel device on shelter dogs & cats unlucky enough to not find a new home. Let them know it is cheaper & more humane to perform euthanasia by injection. This is a huge opportunity to help BAN GAS CHAMBERS in the USA! Please help.

  20. Angela Wade-Allred says:

I sit here everyday posting and reposting animals on death row. The other day it really hit me, how crazy it is that I am begging for the lives of these sad, disgarded animals. What is wrong with society, that we kill unwanted animals? And with all things, carbon monoxide gas chambers! Why are we not promoting adoption more? Why aren’t shelters using the money spent on gas chambers, carbon monoxide, and EBI using the money to fix atleast the female animals that are brought into the shelters or the ones that are found on the streets? Why not pass mandatory spay/neuter laws? What have we become that we kill because of being disgarded, old, sick, etc. It’s a very strange custom and it needs to be stopped.

  21. Bay State Rock Carmelita says:

It never ceases to amaze me how much cruelty and torture humans are capable of inflicting on other sentient beings. The spirit of Auschwitz continues in our animal shelters in the U.S. that employ gas chambers to kill. Especially when there are humane and pain free methods with which to euthanize. While I celebrate Danny’s fortunate survival, I grieve for the many others who suffered a long and agonizing death by gas. It makes me ashamed to be an American. Gas chambers need to be outlawed.

  22. Lelja Maria Hocevar says:

I live in Europe and I can’t even say how shocked my European friends and I were when we heard the USA is using this horrible method of “euthanasia!. Do you have any idea how long it takes before an animal suffocates to death, what fear, pain, horror those poor creatures are going through. To make it easier to understand how barbaric gassing is I quote the words of a former control officer who witnessed killings in one of your many gas chambers:

I can say that being killed in gas chamber is terrifying for the animals and heartbreaking for some of us. It is extremely inhuman to cats and dogs. A HUGE THANK YOU TO PILOTS N PAWS PILOT SCOTT MESSINGER for not only giving Daniel this life saving flight, but for putting out the word to rescue groups in order to find an organization that would give Daniel the chance he needed. Eleventh Hour kindly opened their doors and replied to Scott’s plea. Hopefully gassing chambers will be outlawed in all states. To read more about pilot Scott and Daniel visit http://www.pilotsnpaws.org.

  24. Jessica says:

How could I not know Animal Shelter’s were gassing animals? What a cruel and inhumane method. For all those people submitting applications to adopt this dog – if you are in the market and able to adopt – go to your local shelter! Millions of dogs need homes.

  25. Ashley says:

When I turned on my T.V and saw this I turned on my computer as soon as possible to see how to adopt this dog, maybe I’m too over whelmed and is looking over it but i do not see how to adopt him..

    1. ? says:

ITS PATHETIC WHENEVER AN ANIMAL CHEATS DEATH AND IT MAKES THE NEWS,PEOPLE ALL LINE UP TO ADOPT SUCH ANIMAL.BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER ANIMALS THAT ARE IN SHELTERS THAT CHEAT DEATH EVERYDAY..ADOPT ONE OF THOSE INSTEAD OF THE FLAVOR OF THE WEEK.

      1. Donna says:

@ ? – what were you afraid to leave a “real” name. What exactly do you mean by whenever an animal cheats death. Do the research! In the past 12 years there have only been 3 animals to survive the gas chamber. This is not about the thousands of animals in shelters it’s about how cruel and inhuman GAS CHAMBERS torture these poor animals. There is a better more humane way to do euthanize. Maybe you should be complaining to the breeders that cannot sell their dogs or return dogs to shelters because they did not do their research on the breed that they were adopting so they end up back in the system and quite possibly become a statistic. Stop the GASSING it’s cruel and inhumane!

    2. Colleen says:

He has over 50 applicants already – but Eleventh Hour has many other wonderful pets to adopt! Visit ehrdogs.org!

    3. Jessica says:

Ashley, there are millions of animals – just as sweet with a sad story of their own – that need a home. Please go to your local shelter and check them out!

  26. DianeD says:

Well, all I can say is there was a Daniel once who walked out of the lions’ den!!!

  27. Goldie Bartley says:

The Lord was w[th him..Think this over. We are all Gods creatures.

  28. Tommy says:

I wish we would euthanize useless people in this country instead of innocent animals – supporting animals would be much easier on the taxpayer’s wallets.

    1. ? says:

      AMEN TO THAT

    2. Renee says:

I agree!!! These innocent animals don’t deserve to suffer such a fate just for being born and unwanted.
Let’s *take out* the rapists and murderers that are costing us millions of dollars to house in prisons.
What a sick world we live in when innocent creatures are put to death in such a barbaric manner for the crime of being alive.
Wake up people! This crap needs to be stopped.

  29. NYGirl says:

WoW this is the second story I read in a two weeks like this. The other was a cat that they tried to euthanize twice and then didn’t have a heart the third time to do it. Maybe this is a sign from GOD or some higher power that gassing dogs and cats to death is not going to work. Adorable dog. I hope he finds a great home.

    1. marc says:

Yes, I think you are right. God was behind this. By the same token, I guess he was napping on 9/11, in a deep sleep during the Holocaust, and out to lunch during a host of other (in)famous world events. Yep. I think you are onto something.

      1. Lynn Thomas says:

God was busy helping a football team secure a victory.

    Go doggy Danny……..good doggy.

  31. NYCChica says:

Lucky dog! I hope he finds a good “forever home.” Such a cutie!

    1. Melody Levay says:

Me too! my little girl is begging for another dog since our last one was put down. She thinks about her little dog so much and cries over it almost everyday. I wonder how much Daniel the dog is?

      1. Lynn Humphrey says:

Go to AdoptaPet.com or petfinder.com and find your family another pet that needs a second chance from shelters and rescues near you…there are many more needing homes out there, just like Daniel did. Please adopt and save a life, so many healthy dogs are euthanized.

    2. toni says:

May God Bless this dog and all of the others who are in similar situations, but will not survive. We need to ban this barbaric form of euthanization. 3. Ms Dusty Stepanski says:

If only people would visit their local shelters and pick a pet from the hundreds of animals waiting to be adopted on death row. If people adopted instead of buying from dealers and pet shops more animals would not have to be gassed to death. Gassing is a cruel way to put down animals and should be replaced by a more humane lethal injection. Better yet promote spaying and neutering so there will not be so many unwanted animals!
