80-Year-Old Man Falls Into Sinkhole Outside His Oceanside Home

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — An elderly Long Island man got quite a shock when he went to pick up the Sunday morning paper outside his Oceanside home.

Michael Ciron, 80, stepped onto his lawn and fell into an 8-foot deep sinkhole.

“I picked up the paper, before you know it, I fell into this here hole,” Ciron told 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera.

His screams woke up his daughter who called 911.

“I run to his room first thinking that maybe he fell down or something,” Maria Ciron said.

She finally found her father outside trying to dig himself out of the sinkhole.

“Taking the dirt from the higher part, scraping it down, and I finally got my head out,” Ciron said.

A short time later, the Oceanside fire department arrived and rescuers freed him from the hole.

Ciron said he’s “very sore” but grateful that nothing was broken.

Ciron believes the sinkhole may have been the site of an old well or cesspool which caved in because of Saturday’s wet snow.

They shouldn’t be too surprised to find out that he or the city may have a broken sewer or storm drain slowly taking the soil away.

Thank goodness this gentleman was not seriously injured, especially at his age. That hole was probably there but not as deep, until we had that heavy snow.

I can’t begin to imagine the feeling this gentleman must have had as he was falling . He’s got to be pretty sharp to figure out how to, at least, get his head out of the sinkhole. Good to hear he’s O.K.
