His cab had only gone a few blocks when police said 36-year-old Peter Rodriguez crashed into the vehicle on the service road of the Long Island Expressway.

Rodriguez fled the scene.

Gibbons was pronounced dead on arrival.

"Peter Rodriguez – you may be able to run but you cannot hide for long cause we will find you," the victim's sister, Bernadette Gibbons said. "Only a coward runs from his mistakes, but it takes a real man to come forward. So own up to your actions."

Gibbons was joined by 100 family members, government and civic leaders Tuesday near the crash site.
