Woman Snaps Picture Of Alleged Subway Groping Suspect

19-Year-Old Says Enough Is Enough And Takes Matters Into Her Own Hands

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police now have a clear look at an alleged subway groper, all because of a woman’s quick thinking.

The victim turned the tables on her attacker, reports CBS 2’s Kristin Thorne.

A young woman snapped a picture of the suspect sitting on the train only minutes after she says he attacked her.

Police said the 19-year-old woman was standing on the platform of the downtown 6 train at Union Square at around 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 23, when the man grabbed her by the shoulder, lifted up her dress and touched her private area.

Instead of running away, though, the young woman followed him onto the train and took his picture.

“If her airing the photo means one less person is affected by him — she did the right thing,” Upper East Side resident Hayley Balsam told Thorne.

Self defense experts say if you are going to go after your attacker you should do it in a crowded environment; never when you’re alone.

Police said the suspect is Hispanic and approximately 30 years old, 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds.

While the woman’s bravery is surprising it appears it’s not uncommon. Michelle Stacey told Thorne she also confronted a man who groped her recently on the subway.

“I thought a bag was brushing up against me and I realized it was this man’s hand. I just screamed him and told him let me alone, stop touching me,” the Larchmont resident said.

It was yet another case of women refusing to be victims.

Police sources told Thorne they do not believe this suspect is related to the incidents of groping in Brooklyn and Queens.

let him grope the 3rd rail

  3. Sarah says:

I don’t believer her story. If someone had just groped you, would you seriously stand by, get on the subway with the guy and take his picture. He would be under the subway if it were me.

Despite one or two comments made here, ethnicity has nothing to do with criminal behavior. Also, we must be careful that this woman isn’t making it up. Thus, he’s innocent until proven guilty. I’d like to remind you all of the female weather reporter (I believe) who claimed that someone attacked her – and it was all for attention. For all we know, this might be another instance of that. With all that said, however, if he is found guilty of this crime he should be punished to the fullest extent allowed by current law! Anyone guilty of any sex crime has several issues that need tending to.

How did you get the 92%? Here’s a hint: the more you lie, the less you’re believed.

How did I get the 92%? Smell my finger, that’s how.

Again, race has nothing to do with criminal behavior… I don’t understand why you insist on using that as a means of proving guilt.

      1. Nick says:

I don’t think he’s using it to prove guilt. He’s just pointing out AS USUAL

      2. mm says:

Cos – get your head out of the sand. The black community and a sizeable amount of the hispanic community need to come to terms with crimes committed by their youth. By coming to terms with it and dealing with it, it will greatly improve these two communites. Stop being so ethnocentric. If one is too ethnocentric, their logic becomes flawed. In the 1950’s, it was the Italian Americans who went after the Italian American Mob. They did not make ethnocentric excuses like you do
