New York Road Runners Considered Adding Second NYC Marathon

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – With the New York City Marathon growing in popularity, organizers of the world’s largest race say they’ve considered making it a two-day event.

WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond On The Story

“The idea of two marathons in two days came up when I was being asked ‘Look out 10 years, what are the kinds of things that the city could do and New York Road Runners could do to welcome more people?'” said race director Mary Wittenberg.

But runners should not get their hopes up.

“It’s definitely not something the city and New York Road Runners are talking about right now,” Wittenberg told WCBS 880 reporter Marla Diamond.

A fourth wave start is being considered to grow the race without changing the course.

The 2011 New York City Marathon will be held this Sunday. Folks are still working to prepare the course after the recent snow storm that walloped the area.

I am a runner, have volunteered at the start of the NYC Marathon and totally agree with Gerry’s comments above. New York Road Runners Club has become for lack of a better phrase part of the NYC “Tourism-Industrial complex”. Enough catering to out of towners! All Ms. Wittenberg comments on is the available accommodations in NYC hotels! This idea is an insult to New Yorkers. Why do they need to close the Verrazano Bridge for that long. It is closed until 3PM Sunday afternoon. The race starts around 10:30AM

It’s time for someone to look into how many actual New York City and its 4 borough residents get into this race? We pay all the taxes put up with all the mess. Our city gets shout down for a day. but we can’t get into the race it’s a scam. There are more foreign runners than actual New Yorkers.

How much is this foolishness costing the taxpayers?

Mayor Mike, please fix the roads in Queens!

The 17 acre Con Ed property in Astoria –
Mayor, you preach health and going green,
how about putting in an affordable YMCA on that land for our children.
So glad the Fed-Ex facility did not happen.

With all do respect Mayor –
Spend some of our money on Astoria and other places other than Manhattan please.

i don’t support a 2 day event. marathon sunday is a city wide holiday. add a 4th wave if you need to add more people. i have been a member of NYRR since 1978.

You neglect to mention how residents are inconvenienced for an entire day as it is. It’s not a Citywide holiday 00 it’s prison day because the five boroughts are jailed where they are and stuck not being able to walk or drive where they want. It’s a pain in the A$$ and ruins one day out of two day rest period the 99% in NYC have, need and want.
