David Crosby, Graham Nash Play Zuccotti Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Occupy Wall Street got a blast from the past Tuesday when activist musicians David Crosby and Graham Nash put on a concert for protesters in Zuccotti Park.

The two 60s era protest performers put on a 4-song acoustic set, wrapping it up with “Teach Your Children Well.”

Nash said he wrote the song 45 years ago and believes the words still ring true today.

At the end of their set, the duo encouraged the protesters to continue to camp out and occupy the area.

Crosby has seen the encampment at Zuccotti Park before. He stopped by there on Nov. 4.

The upcoming cold weather is not going to be music to the ears of protesters, however.

Demonstrators have been putting up military-grade tents designed to withstand extreme weather.

Twenty-seven tents are expected to be up within the next 10 days.

The tents cost about $25,000 that’s being paid through some of the hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to the group.

LISTEN: WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reports

Tents are against the rules at the park, but the company that owns the land has declined to enforce that rule for weeks.

Most of the protesters who have been living in the park have been staying in lightweight, two-person tents.

Maria Failing has been working at the park for three and a half weeks and says there is a key difference between the two types of tents.

“They’re weather proof, the other ones were not,” she said.

Protesters are also putting wooden pallets on the ground and covering them with foam insulation board.

WCBS 880’s Alex Silverman: New Effort To Help Street Businesses Impacted By OWS

While all of that is happening inside the park, it is negatively impacting business along the streets surrounding the park.

The scent of egg sandwiches and coffee dripped into Zuccotti Park from Ali Amene’s cart on Cedar Street on Tuesday morning.

“I lose a lot because my regular customer doesn’t pass… here,” he told WCBS 880 reporter Alex Silverman.

With kids in college to support, he’s been working 17-hour days since the occupation started.

“Wake up 1:30. I go home 9 o’clock, like a horse,” he said.

“The classical 99 percent work hard every day,” said Sean Basinski, who runs the non-profit Street Vendor Project.

They’ve set up a website collecting donations to make up the vendors losses.

They took in $2,000 on just the first day.

“Convert those donations into cash and bring it over to the vendors and give it to them and then make sure the food gets delievered, which we did for the first time last night,” said Basinski.

Amene says the money will help, but really, he just wants things back to normal.

“Tents are against the rules at the park, but the company that owns the land has declined to enforce that rule for weeks….”

…thus rendering the rule NULL, VOID, and completely UNENFORCEABLE.

If you want to support OWS consider buying some of my OWS shirts.
100% of proceeds are being donated to the OWS Movement.

    Corporate shills!!!

I w ill believe they are anti-capitalist when they move out of their palatial homes, give up their expensive cars and INSIST the 99 percent partake in the huge profits they have made off their Art.

After all, we ARE all a big comfy cozy collective. We want our $$ and we WANT it now!!!

OWS–Start by DEMANDING Crosby, Stills, Etc hand over all the $$ THEY’ve made through the years on THEIR corporate labels!!!

Oh–It’s their $$? They earned it and no one else did??? Gee sounds a bit Randist, no????!

No one will pay to hear these 60’s has-beens, so they show up here to shore up their egos.

OWS want some cheese with your whine? (juvenile I know, just couldn’t resist)

    • Jeff Sayin

Lame – just like your many other nauseating posts.

  • Andrew Nutra

OWS, wouldn’t it be great if we can just drum our problems away? Play your drums to bring peace love and happiness until we’re whistling “Zip a de do da” out of our @ssholdes. Somewhere out there some Wall Street executives are holding their quarterly strategy meeting and they’re saying that your drumming is making a point. They will withdraw all their money immediately and throw the cash out the window.

“Tents are against the rules at the park, but the company that owns the land has declined to enforce that rule for weeks.”

By not enforcing the park rules from the beginning, Brookfield has forfeited the right to ever enforce those rules in the future.

    just another side story in;

“as the illuminatti turns the world.”

  • working girl

the city really needs to get more with the program. concerts need to have permits, and occupancy numbers maximized. i really am tired of all this zuccotti park “occupation.” the company that owns the property needs to be a better neighbor to the people and businesses. the citywon’t answer questions about measuring noise levels. if permits are required by law for other enterprises, then the ows crowd needs to be held to the same standard. otherwise, set a date for them to be out. don’t infringe on the people who call that part of the city home any longer we have heard “the message,” now work within the system to try and effect change.

    • Jeff Sayin

If you are “tired” of the occupation, take a nap and stop reading stories about OWS. FYI – singing unamplified songs with an acoustic guitar does not require a permit – nor should it. see e.g. washington square park on any nice day.

Fortunatley freedom of assembly and speech still exists despite how tiring it is for you and others that disagree with OWS.

      • working girl

        Oh, pooh!

OWS: Waaah, I want the attention I didn’t get growing up because my parents were too busy working for a living, waaahhh (cue drumming in the background)

Can we run them over with tanks yet?
The OWS Movement has collected over $600,000 in donations so far, and yet the homeless are shunned from partaking in their 5-Star Chef prepared meals…

All praise and sincere thanks to Crosby and Nash for showing their support to the LIberty Park youngins. If I could make it there and down to the cold, hard ground, I would be pitching a tent and placing my sleeping bag along with these young determined people. They are heroes for making a stand for all those devastated by the greed of Wall ST. In the 60’s and 70’s, we stoppped the Viet Nam War, and together, we will stop the inequities that threaten our democracy.
    See you Thursday!!!! M

Seriously stop blaming others. “bankers” are not going to jail because “bankers” did nothing illegal. Hard for you to admit that or is everyone trying to crush you?. Sad. Get to work.

    • Jeff Sayin

Not true – bankers have repeatedly violated the law, the SEC/Justic Dept simply chose not to prosecute or give a a slap on this wrist.

      • lisa

but, sir, there isnt any work…thoughtful advise anyway, not/

Even incredibly bad music can’t stop the movement. Omnaris to the nose, and Preparation H to the …………………….

  • Andrew Nutra

OWS: playing 60s radicals they saw on TV because the liberal arts degree they mastered in is not doing them any good in a down economy. Well guess what? Drumming and kicking out the homeless and ex-cons will not help you either. This is a land of opportunity not guarantees. Maybe you shouldn’t have borrowed $200K to master in Medieval Eastern Ugandan poetry.

    • Joe Hamster

Your comment is so stupid and immature. There are real people all over this country with great skills and experience, who cannot find jobs do to the greed, mismanagement and no accountablility by the rich and powerful and their bought and sold government.

      • Andrew Nutra

        Medieval Eastern Ugandan poetry

    • Schmellma Arss

Hey Andrew, less time listening to Rush and Hannity and more time in the library should solve your problems, of which there are many.

  • Andrew Nutra

Give it up OWS! Somehow I can’t see Wall Street corporate leaders sitting around at their next strategy meeting and saying: “Wow, the Occupiers played their drums really loud. I am quaking in my boots!! How could they stand being in the cold being surrounded by rapists and ex-cons? Let’s change our ways and give back all the money we ever earned. God forbid those kids start to look for jobs.” I can’t see it, can you?

  • Andrew Nutra

I bet you my 401K Crosby and Nash will leave the park after their set. Who needs that? They make more money in a gig than these OWS people will see in their lives.

  • Andrew Nutra

“When asked what their focus is, their answers are as varied and colorful as their clothing”
“They get support from celebrities who will earn in one week more money than they’ll ever see in their lifetimes”
“Their drumming has magical powers that can change a system of government”
“They rally against corporations but don’t mind using corporate made clothing and tents.”
“They complain about cops but then need them to protect them from rapists and homeless people eating their gourmet food.”
“They rally against corporations yet eat at McDonald’s”
“They want to occupy Sesame Street next for the Cookie Monster stole 99% of all cookies”
“They want cheese with their whine”

They are, the world’s most interesting protestors. Try to stay relevant my friends.

  • Andrew Nutra

Big deal!!! Everyone knows Stephen Stills is behind Crosby, Stills and Nash. He wrote their best songs “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” “Wooden Ships” “Southern Cross” and he’s the best guitarist out of all of them.

    • lisa

Andrew…you are off the mark on a lot, but did get it right with the Stephen Stills comment. cheers

That should clear the park out in no time! I never would have thought of it.

Hippies are not to blame for the troubles of the world as they chose an alternate lifestyle. Why blame them if they didn’t fit into the standard American notion of 9 to 5 and a white shirt and tie with polished black shoes and stay-pressed pants?

The entire notion of corporate America is busted as the health plans are going away and the pensions are going away. And the corporate greed represented by BANKSTERS, insurance companies and their corporate lobbyists have destroyed jobs and job opportunities.

Let no deed go unpunished – keep on allowing companies to offshore and printing more worthless currency and watch more and more people slip into homelessness. The pols are useless as they will say almost anything to get elected and then do the bidding of the powerful corporate lobbies.

Wonder why people are disillusioned and are not motivated to vote? Re-read this if you don’t get it.

    • Kazoo

I till have no idea what you are saying nor do I think YOU know what you are saying. Companies don’t print currancy the Govt does. All businesses are in business to make money(simple concept) that you and your hippee friends call greed. As far as greed, Yes it is real in all walks of life. The unions are greedy with their demands for more money, benefits and pensions, the coporate big wigs with their desire for more wealth, and the welfare state proponets who desire money for nothing. Everyone needs to take a step back and rethink about how we got to this point. The housing debacle was Clinton’s idea that everyone should own a home – BIG MISTAKE. The war was Bush’s however if you remember we were ATTACKED. That aside even though I voted for him I will admit he was NOT the greatest. Obama is by far the worst president of all time. He did inherit a bad economy however he made it a 100 times worse. He divide this counrty so badly that I can only hope we can repair the damage. Pelosi, Reid Schulmer played major roles in dividing the country as well when the Dems had the super majority and forced the health bill debacle down our mouths. Until all of them are out on their rearends and we have responsible POLS from both parties sit down, with cooler heads, to worked it out, it won’t get better.

    • LM

Josh, I have no problem with people choosing an “alternate lifestyle”. God bless them. However don’t complain when the people who choose to get up early and work hard to either start a business or climb the corporate ladder end up making more money than those with this “alternate lifestyle”.

People who work hard and take risks deserve to reap the rewards of their efforts. What has happened to our society that this is not recognized?

  • Tom

Please don’t compare this to Woodstock. Woodstock was about music and peace. This is about… I’m not educated, I’m not employable, I’m not motivated…so give me a handout and something for free. This isn’t a protest, this is a joke. Most of America is having a good laugh watching.

    • Jeff Sayin

Actually – your comment demonstrates your ignorance. A majority of Americans support OWS protesters.

Your insults at OWS protestors say more about your ignorance than anything else

      • Andrew Nutra

The majority of Americans aren’t occupying their cities. The majority of Americans are hardworking people who still believe this is a land of opportunities and not guarantees.

        • Jeff Sayin

The majority of Americans support OWS protesters and many have jobs and volunteer there tiime for OWS.

OWS never claimed they want handouts or “guarentees”. You just made this up, so you could criticze a legitimate concern – gross economic inequality in our society.

How does it feel to knock down your own lame straw arguments?

  • brooklyn4ever

For the prices that these guys charge for a concert ticket and never really being able to afford one, I will walk from my office to see them.

  • The Realist

How appropriate that they interviewed a protester named “Failing”!

yes these hippies messed up the country … like getting us out of the pointless war of vietnam (which killed 60thousand american soldiers and MILLIONS of vietnamese) and these hippies did things like equal rights to america… not to mention apple computer…. as well as some of the best music ever created.

    • Todd

Is there nothing hippies can’t do?

      • BO STINKS!

Yes, take a shower, go to work and pay taxes

Good morning, Viktard Rise and whine!

      • Vik

Kiss my 99% working for a living and not terroriziing restaurants for a free handout because I’m too g-danged lazy to go out there and look for a job A$$ !!! Go crap on a fleabagger with STD at Zuccotti.

Hoping that means Stills and Young are to smart to engage in this stupidity. Wonder when Wavy Gravy will show up and complete the circus

    • wow

      pretty sure they’re dead..

      • Amber

Stills and Young would be very disappointed to hear their tours have been cut short by their deaths! They’re both on tour right now. Wavy Gravy’s still hanging on too

  • Mike

I Crosby still on drugs? This fool took off on a drug escape from a hospital and almost died from an overdose! He was a fugitive for a long time! My question is why is he allowed to hang with druggies?

  • sammy

    LMAO –

    • Gary R.

Sammy: Please employ logic and explain how you can make such a laughable assertion about blaming hippie offspring for the criminal misdeeds of the bankers, Countrywide ‘s Angelo Moziillo, the corrupted ratings agencies and the still-unregulated derivatives markets?

Insert sounds of crickets as we wait for you to watch enough Fox to come up with a reply.

CSNY were one of the greatest songwriting amalgamations of all time. So they did some drugs and David Crosby served some time. Big deal. So did the Stones and some of the Beatles. They have a right to speak their minds and Crosby has been doing so since he courageously spoke out against the ridiculous reasoning of the Warren Commission cover-up back when no other entertainers would dare.

What exactly have you all done?
