Gas Line Problem At Alfred E. Smith Houses Threatens Thanksgiving Turkey Plans

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A happy Thanksgiving and a hearty holiday turkey are in jeopardy on the Lower East Side.

Sixteen unlucky families at the Alfred E. Smith Houses have not had gas since Nov. 9 are worried the problem won't get resolved in time for cooking the all-important Thanksgiving turkey.

"Just from some guy messing up our gas line...to destroy all of our Thanksgiving, we don't have a Thanksgiving and we really need one," one resident told 1010 WINS' Terry Sheridan.

The New York City Housing Authority, which owns the complex, has distributed hot plates for residents to cook food, but you can't roast a turkey on a hot plate.

However, NYCHA has completed the repairs and Con Edison hopes to get the gas turned on by Thursday. Con Ed said it still must get access to the apartments and inspect and test the lines.

It's not the first time that residents have dealt with such an issue. Tenants also lost gas during the Easter holiday.

Elected officials have expressed anger and concern about recurring outages and their duration.
