Video Surfaces Of A Young Woody Allen Boxing A Kangaroo

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A new Woody Allen documentary pulled no punches. And neither did a large kangaroo the New York icon climbed into the ring with back in the '60's.

Video has surfaced on YouTube of the auteur getting slappy with the marsupial.

It was all for the show "Hippodrome."

"It's generally known to the public that I'm a guy who can handle his fists pretty good," Allen deadpans to the audience. "Tonight, on 'Hippodrome,' you're going to watch me fight the Australian light heavyweight champion."

Allen, dressed in shorts and a tank top, then steps into a ring with a kangaroo, which is taller than he is, reared up. The roo is wearing boxing gloves.

The third man in the ring - well, in this case, the second - is apparently the animal's trainer.

Allen gingerly paws at and prances around the animal, which finally lunges at him. The trainer keeps shoving Allen toward the kangaroo, which occasionally sends both paws out in a lunge.

Eventually both Allen and the kangaroo hop around the ring.

Finally, it is the trainer that gets the worst of it. While attempting to guide the kangaroo, it kicks him in the gut with both feet.

The Woody Allen documentary aired on PBS's American Masters series over the last two days.
