Prosecutor Jennifer Siegel said Jesus Alejandro stabbed 25-year-old Christina Hernandez -- the mother of his son --  26 times, slit her throat, and left her head next to the open oven door with the gas turned on.

It was a scene so awful, said the prosecutor, that the seasoned homicide detective who had to describe it to a jury was fighting back tears.

Alejandro was 18-years-old at the time of the murder. He claimed he didn't remember doing it.

Judge Gregory Caro sentenced Alejandroto 23 year to life in prison.

Sobbing family members packed the courtroom Monday wearing t-shirts that read "We want justice."

"This senseless death was the culmination of a relationship plagued by violence," said District Attorney Cy Vance.
