FAIRFIELD, CT (WCBS 880) - The town librarians in Fairfield have chosen a free verse novel, calling it a compelling read. They expect thousands of residents to be turning the pages.
WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau On The Story
One of the librarians, Mary Coe, says this year’s selection is called “The Watch That Ends The Night” by Allan Wolf.
“The subtitle is ‘Voices from the Titanic’ and what he’s done is he’s taken the story of the Titanic and told it from 24 different voices,” Coe told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.
They are the voices of the ship’s captain and some of the passengers. Even objects such as the iceberg get a voice.
Coe says it’s a fascinating blend of fiction and nonfiction.
She says the author will speak to readers in town next March, about a month before the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the luxury liner.
“The timing was perfect and I think it’s the perfect book. I really do,” Coe told Schneidau.
