Jorge Posada Likes Mets, Feeling Not Mutual

NEW YORK (WFAN) — Jorge Posada knows his days in pinstripes are over, though apparently he still wants to play ball right here in New York.

According to WFAN’s Jon Heyman, the Yankees fan favorite recently reached out to the Mets regarding the team’s opening at backup catcher.

The Mets told Posada they weren’t interested, reported Heyman. Sandy Alderson and New York’s front office are looking instead for a defensive-minded, catch-and-throw style backstop.

It appears the 40-year-old veteran, who hit .235 in 115 games last season for the Yankees, isn’t ready to call it a career just yet. But where will the aging catcher land if not the Bronx or Flushing?

“I don’t think there’s not even a percentage of chance that I can come back (to the Yankees),” Posada said earlier this month. “It’s not going to happen.”

It was a tough year indeed for Posada. He lost his job as the Yankees’ starting catcher to Russell Martin before the season began. Then there was the messy May incident after manager Joe Girardi dropped him to ninth in the batting order. He created a firestorm by asking out of the lineup and apologized for the brouhaha the next day.

Girardi eventually took away Posada’s full-time DH job, using him mostly against right-handers.

“I love teaching. I think I can help out,” Posada said before his foundation’s annual dinner. “If I’m not playing, I will be doing something with baseball.”

After the 2007 season, Posada received — and considered — an offer from the Mets before re-signing with the Yankees.

Were the Mets too quick to dismiss Posada? Sound off in the comments below…

Jorge, Time to retire. You suck and proved it last year, other than for a few good at bats. Maybe try Japan !!

  2. MANNY CRESPO says:

WELL I REALLY THINK IF NO ONE PICKS UP JORGE & THE YANKEES DON’T TAKE HIM BACK. HE SHOULD NOT GO WITH THE METS, BECAUSE THE METS WILL NEVER GO TO THE WORLD SERIS & HE SHOULD NOT MAKE HIM SELF LOOK BAD BY GOING TO THE METS. JUST SEE IF HE CAN GET A COACHING JOB & IF NOT JUST RETIRE, BECAUSE HE IS 40 YEARS OLD ALREADY. I HOPE HE FINDS A COACHING JOB IN SOME TEAM. GOOD LUCK JORGE & GOD BLESS YOU…

I have always been a big fan of yours.
But, “Jorge” it is time to hang them up.
Look at it this way, If it is not now, It will
be tommorow. The time and date will come.
Be a champ that you are and go out on your
    terms not theirs

  4. flea says:

That’s pretty bad, when the Mets don’t even want you….LOL

  5. Wilbur Huckle says:

Posada’s agent claims Heyman made the whole thing up. Any response from Heyman?

  6. AL THE CAT says:

i would like to have posada a s a met, he would bring a wining attitude to
    the team. that needs it.

  7. David B says:

Just what the Mets would have needed … another aging / past his prime veteran star ! There’s a place for JP … likely with a young team needing a veteran presence. I don’t see him as a coach as he never was a text book defensive catcher.

  8. brooklyn4ever says:

The Mets need help, not hinderance. The Bronx can have him. Queen’s does not need him.

    1. Micharl says:

Sorry for the disillusionment, but Queens needs all the help it can get.

  9. Brian Naranjo says:

the mets weren’t quick enough in dismissing Posada

  10. BleacherCreature26 says:

We are a lesser team without Jorgie.

If not at DH, he should be made a bench coach. Would be great to have his veteran wisdom and competitive edge.

Jorgie, every Yankee fan wants you back in the Bronx. HIP-HIP JOR-GE!!

    1. AC says:

Every Yankee fan does NOT want Jorge back.
Thank you for your service. You were well paid thru your career…it’s time to retire; you can’t catch and you can’t hit anymore.
