Michigan Mayor Under Fire For Anti-Gay Facebook Post Aimed At New York

TROY, Mich. (CBSNewYork) — A Michigan Mayor is in hot water for comments that she made on her Facebook page. The post has been deleted but some say that her words can’t be so easily erased.

Evan Wolfson, executive director of “Freedom To Marry,” told CBS 2’s Ann Mercogliano, “It’s very sad that a public official would refer to a group of loving and committed couples as ‘queers.'”

Wolfson was referencing a June Facebook post made by Troy Mayor Janice Daniels, a few months before she was elected to office, and one day after gay marriage was legalized here in New York.

The post reportedly read: “I think I’m going to throw away my ‘I love New York’ carrying bag, now that queers can get married there.”

Wolfson, who is a newlywed thanks to the new law, was disgusted by Daniels’ comments.

“Mayor or no mayor it doesn’t put a good face on the community that she now represents. And now that she is mayor all the more reason to be bringing it down.” He said.

Daniels’ comments are causing a firestorm on the Web and on the streets of New York. She did not respond to CBS2’s request for an interview, but  did express regret in a statement to a CBS affiliated radio station.

“I absolutely do regret it. I shouldn’t have used such language. While I do believe marriage should be between one man and one woman, it was inappropriate to use that language. It was meant to be a joke,” Daniels said.

Supporters say that Daniels was exercising free speech, but others are calling it an attack.

Susana Pugilese of Hoboken, N.J. told Mercogliano, “She has the right to express her opinion, but she has no right to be offensive.”

While Daniels may not have been speaking on behalf of the city, officials in Troy said that they are getting flooded with requests calling for the mayor’s resignation.

And while she does appear apologetic, Daniels said that she has no intention of resigning.

The City of Troy released a statement saying that it is proud of its diversity and that personal comments made by the mayor and any individual council member do not reflect the opinions of the city.

What do you think, is it time for Mayor Daniels to resign? Or was this an expression of free speech? Sound off in our comments section below…

Get over it! She has every right to express her opinion, and libs are ready to “attack” any politician who doesn’t follow their views. It’s so hypocritical of libs to speak of “tolerance”, when in fact, they are the most intolerant when it comes to conservatives and Christians.. I imagine there are some “choice comments” that “gays” have posted on their fb pages about those who don’t believe as they do, but we feel there are more important issues needing to be addressed, than to get our panties in a tightwad over every comment out there! Her comment was made prior to her election, and on her personal page….don’t be such a cry baby.

It’s not views that people disagree with. It’s the entire notion that adults can bully in a society and hold an elective office. This was NOT just an opinion, this was bullying.

When it comes to such proselytizing Christians, they also bully their own children via indoctrination. It is a forced brainwashing in hopes that their children will grow up being as intolerant as they are: Intolerant of science, reason, and any empathy of humanity that does not suit their forced small circle of bigots.

She need not apologize to anyone, this is still America and we still have Freedom of Speech and she has every right to voice her opinion on HER Facebook. To bad if some of these sickos are offended, you know what, you sickos offend me. Life is not a one-way street, with you people having it all your way so if you want to flaunt it, deal with the results. God bless America.

You need all the blessings you can get. And I’m so GLAD I don’t know you personally; you sound like a real B.

  • EasterBunny

Gays (and jews) run the media. Enough said.

First I’d like to say that I support the Gay marriage. The fact that conservitaves claim that it ruins the sanctity of marriage but yet get divorced after commiting to death due us part is a joke. Newt Gingrich anyone. However the mayors comments are protected speech. Until the constituion is ammended to not protect hate speech there is nothing we can do but to respect that. Our country should be based on bieng able to say what we want, regardless of how it makes someone else feel. People need to grow thicker skin. Im a 300 pound obese tattooed white man. I deal with discrimination and people making rude comments about me. Geuss what, im happy with who I am as a person. I dont care what anyone says.

Sounds like you are hiding something in the closet.

  • Off Duty

Good grief…..homo sexuals call themselves “que ers”, but God help a straight person doing this. How about “deviants”? “Aberrants”? “Misguided”? “Odd”? “Sick”? “Twisted”? “Abominations”?

    • On Duty

It’s not the term that offends, it’s the sentiment. Many of the terms you use were once used against inter-racial couples (and probably a sentiment shared by the 9 idiots in Kentucky who voted to ban inter-racial couples at their church). “Righteous” ugliness rears its head yet again.

      • juan bohica

Your equating aberrant behavior, specifically homo sexuality with inter-racial coupling merely reveals the vapidness of your point. Inter-racial couples understand “pro-creation” orientation, whereas homo sexuals exist in a dark twisted world.

        • Huh

Hey Juan, you mind is stuck in a dark twisted world…

          • juan bohica

Great retort “Huh”. A fitting moniker though….one you should use on the day you stand before God in judgment. See how it works.
