NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – It’s Super Saturday, the last Saturday you have to shop before Christmas and retailers are taking advantage of what promises to be a big day for holiday sales.

Super Saturday has more to do with the calendar than anything else. Typically, retailers offer deep discounts on the Saturday before Christmas. But this year, that Saturday falls on Christmas Eve, so many stores are cutting prices and staying open longer today.

Macy’s flag-ship and JC Penny in the Manhattan Mall will stay open until midnight. Retailers are offering Christmas Eve type discounts today knowing most people won’t shop last-minute.

“Better this week cause they have more clothes and next week they will have the left overs,” said one shopper.

“I have to get it done this weekend,” said another.

Retailers are staging the Super Saturday to make up for a slump in business since Black Friday.

I hope people aren’t overspending for things they can’t afford in the first place. Christmas should be about the Naivety and the birth of Jesus, not shopping, shopping and more shopping.
