"The toddler was found in the residence but I'm not going to describe exactly where but it's obviously not from natural causes and we are considering this a homicide investigation at this time," said Lt. Gerard V. Pelkofsky of the Suffolk County Police.

CBS 2's Mark Morgan spoke with several residents in the neighborhood, and they are stunned by this holiday tragedy.

"You're scared, this neighborhood over here, this is a nice area. We've never heard of something like this over here," said neighbor Jose Mendoza.

"It's very tragic. It's very sad, very sad. This neighborhood, I don't know what's going to happen next," said neighbor Maria Sarabando.

The cause of death for both victims has not been released as detectives continue their investigation.

"This is Christmas. It's supposed to be joy and happiness. I'm sorry for the family. It's sadness," said neighbor Tarik Butler.

More than 24 hours after police first arrived on the scene, the entire block was still closed to traffic and crime scene units maintained their presence outside of the home.
