Christmas Day Fire In Dumont NJ Kills 1

DUMONT, N.J. (AP) -- Officials say a man was killed when a fire broke out at a northern New Jersey apartment complex.

But the cause of Sunday's fire in Dumont remains under investigation.

Borough Administrator John Perkins told the Record that firefighters found the body in a first-floor apartment shortly after they arrived around 10 a.m. But Perkins declined to provide further details on the victim, including his identity and whether he lived in the apartment where the fire started.

The fire was contained to the apartment and had burned itself out by the time firefighters arrived.

No one else was injured in the fire, though several residents were briefly evacuated as a precaution. Officials say they all were allowed to return to their units later Sunday.
