NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s going to be a very Gaga New Year in the Big Apple.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has selected pop superstar Lady Gaga to push the crystal button that will help drop the famed New Year’s Eve ball and ring in 2012.

Lady Gaga will also be performing for the crowd of 1 million in Times Square.

“I have never met Lady Gaga. I saw her once perform at the Metropolitan Museum,” Bloomberg said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, workers installed the world-famous ball — complete with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles.

The crystal triangles were placed in a new design titled “Let There Be Friendship.” It is meant to represent friends holding hands around the globe.

“You walk in and you see people from all around the world, and I think that’s what [is] awesome about Times Square,” Jawad Alkowaitz said.

Meanwhile, Gaga said that she has never met the mayor, who called her “a great entertainer.”  Bloomberg said he is also expecting a record crowd in Times Square because of predicted “temperate” weather.

    New Year’s Eve is the one day of the year when the City actually LOSES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS on tourism, due to…

    - Lady Gaga’s 6-figure appearance fee;

    - Justin Bieber’s 6-figure appearance fee;

    - Drake’s appearance fee;

    - Cee Lo Green’s appearance fee;

    - Police overtime;

    - Sanitation overtime;

    - all those brand-new Waterford crystals;

    - all those City employees who get paid for THE WHOLE YEAR even though their only job is to set up for New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

    This is so awesome. I love Lady Gaga! This is going to be my best New Years! I don’t even live in New York but I’m going to watch this no matter what!

    A more appropriate pick would have been minnie mouse!

  • where’s the overtime?

    I like Lady Gaga myself, and I’m old enough to be her mother. But a lot in my family can’t stand her and I have no idea why. OK she is a little over the top, but that’s what got her to be where she is today. So I’m pleased with the Mayor’s decision to have The Lady perform for the biggest night in New York City, as well as the rest of the country.
