NEW YORK (WFAN) - Patrick Ewing, former legendary New York Knicks’ big-man and assistant coach of the Orlando Magic delivered a cautious warning to Magic center Dwight Howard.
For Howard, the possibility of leaving Orlando for the New York metro area could be a ‘night and day’ difference according to Ewing who spoke to The New York Post on Wednesday.
“If it’s up to me, he’s going nowhere,” Ewing said to The Post. “I told him playing up there is a lot different from playing here. It’s the amount of media scrutiny that is a lot different, for example.”
Ewing played fifteen seasons for the Knicks knows what comes with the territory of being an NBA superstar in the largest sports media market in the country. He experienced both sides of the coin as he also played in more laid-back markets such as Seattle and Orlando before retiring in September 2002.
It remains to be seen whether Howard will remain in Orlando for the long-term or eventually be traded to a new address. Magic fans have campaigned hard trying to convince Howard to stay and pressure ownership into doing everything possible to keep their star in Orlando.
NBA analysts have speculated that Howard could end up with the Nets once Brook Lopez returns from a fractured foot. Currently, Lopez will miss an estimated six to eight weeks.
Other parties interested in acquiring Howard include the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks. At this point, it’s unclear who is in pole position to land Howard if he becomes available.
Tonight, Howard be welcoming the Nets to the Amway Center in Orlando. Tip-off is at 7PM and the game will be broadcast on Sports Radio WFAN 660.
