Wakir Bryant Pleads Not Guilty In 2-Year-Old Newark Boy's Shooting Death

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of his girlfriend's toddler son.

A public defender representing 27-year-old Wakir Bryant entered the plea on his behalf in court in Newark Wednesday.

Bryant faces aggravated manslaughter charges in the death of 2-year-old Mikhy Robinson. The child died Friday after being shot in the mouth earlier that day in a Newark apartment.

Prosecutors said Bryant drove Robinson and the child's mother to a nearby hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead. He was arrested later that night.

Bryant remains held on $1 million bail.

Authorities have not yet disclosed if the boy accidentally shot himself or if he was shot by Bryant.

Officials say Bryant has a long criminal history, including prior weapons offenses.

Mikhy's death was Newark's 90th homicide of 2011.
