Connecticut Paramedic Accused Of Raping Woman In Ambulance

HARTFORD, CT (AP / WCBS 880) – A paramedic has been arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted a woman in the back of an ambulance as she was strapped to a stretcher.

WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau On The Story

Hamden police said Friday the 22-year-old woman was unconscious Dec. 25 when she awoke to find 49-year-old Mark Powell assaulting her.

Powell surrendered Thursday to face charges of first-degree sexual assault and unlawful restraint. The North Haven man was released on $25,000 bond and is due back in court in Meriden on Jan. 19. He did not respond to a phone message Friday seeking comment.

Police say the woman fell and suffered a head injury around 3 a.m. while attending a holiday party. The assault allegedly took place while she was being taken to a hospital. She contacted Hamden police after her release.

Does anyone REALLY believe this woman? If she fell and had a head injury, she was strapped down to the gurney so she didnt fall again. It is very common for a paramedic to have to straddle a patient in order to start an IV on the opposite side of the walkway, remember its basically a large station wagon! She was “semi conscious” that means an altered mental state, and if she was that drunk or hit her head that hard, quite possibly some of her clothes had been removed to make sure she didnt have any broken bones that she couldnt tell them about! Quite obvious that reporters have never seen anyone treated in an ambulance, they would show a little more skepticism, and speaking of skeptical, are we supposed to believe that the DRIVER was just la di da, la di da, pay no attention to what is happening in my rear view mirror? Please!

Mark is an extremely good paramedic and good person!! It’s a shame that we only take into account one side of the story and that is from a 22yo who was at a party, fell and became unconscious. We don’t know why – alcohol, drugs, etc. She was probably strapped to a long board to protect her spine and neck from any further injury. Most people who “come to” after being unconscious are scared and freaking out because they are in a strange environment with strange people. She could have misunderstood or misinterpreted what Mark was doing at the time – in our profession we actually have to …. oh my god….touch people to treat them and determine injuries.

The drivers usually know everything that is going on in the back of the ambulance…if she felt that she was being attacked…she didn’t yell, scream?

I’ve had many male partners, who would never even think about doing any harm to any female or male, request that I be in the back with the female patient just because of this issue. It’s sad. They would only be sitting next to the patient taking her blood pressure, pulse rate and just talking to her but they are afraid that the patient will suddenly say that my partner “molested” them. Sad and pathetic.

Mark is a very big guy in a very small ambulance. There’s rarely 2 paramedics in the back. In a commerical service, like AMR, there is 1 provider in the back and 1 provider driving. Unless the patient is extremely serious.

This country (mostly the media) has a way of assuming that someone is guilty and making it appear that way. All because of an accusation, Mark’s professional life is potentially already destroyed and his personal life probably will be also. If he is guilty…it will not be tolerated by the EMS community.

what a bizarre they not ususally have 2 paramedics in the back of an ambulance? the descrption in the story makes the paramedic sound like a sexual predator..there are always 2 sides, so it would be interesting top hear the paramedic or his attorney give a statement…

Despicable! Who can you trust these days???

You can trust a paramedic, but never trust a pig.
