CENTRAL ISLIP, NY (CBSNewYork) — Suffolk County police say a drunk man behind the wheel nearly destroyed a home on Long Island.

LISTEN: WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reports

It happened around 1 a.m. on Julie Crescent in Central Islip. Police say the driver hit a tree with his SUV in front of a two-story home before it flipped and crashed through the home’s garage.

Thankfully, the house was empty and up for sale, but the owner had just re-modeled and it looked brand new.

Neighbor Sophia Gabriell said the crash sounded like an earthquake.

“Boom, boom,” she said. “It did not sound like bullet sounds or even a car crash. Thank God no one was walking across the street.”

Police arrested the driver, Juan Carlos, on DWI charges. He was not seriously injured.

You may also get a discount if you take a defensive driving course. If there is a young driver on the policy who is a good student, has taken a drivers education course or is at a college out of the area without a car, you may also qualify for a lower rate. search online for “Clearance Auto Insurance” they are the best for student drivers
