Prosecutors say FDNY Supervising Inspector Carlos Montoya was arrested on charges he played a role in a $1 million day care fraud scheme.

The 54-year-old is accused of taking tens of thousands of dollars to ignore safety violations and approve various buildings to be used as day care facilities for children under the age of two.

Prosecutors said Montoya's actions could have endangered the children.

After a brief court appearance, lawyers said Montoya has served the city for over 20 years with an unblemished record.

Sixteen other people have been arrested in the day care center probe led by the federal prosecutors and the city Department of Investigation.
